Work to your strengths or challenge yourself to develop new strengths. For example, you might create a PowerPoint presentation to share with a group as an ideal way to disseminate population health and determinants of change information. Or, you might want to offer a screening of a compelling episode of Unnatural Causes, or some other program, and lead a discussion afterwards. Whatever method you choose, remember the objective is to convey important information about the determinants of health and to stimulate an exchange of ideas about these important concepts.
To prepare for this Scholar-Practitioner Project Assignment, review your Learning Resources for the course and select a topic on which to build your project. Your selected topic should reflect your understanding of the social determinants of health. Where would your presentation do the greatest good? Think about possible locations for sharing this information. Some suggestions include but are not limited to:
•Community agencies, hospitals, local health departments or government offices
•Your employer
•Local high school or community college health classes
•Senior centers, retirement communities, youth groups or faith-based organizations
•Others (Please submit to your Instructor for approval.)
To complete this Scholar-Practitioner Project Assignment, submit a 1- to 2-page summary of your assignment for your Instructor to review and provide feedback. Your summary should include the following elements:
•Topic
•Audience
•Location
•Mode
You can also start working on confirming your audience, date (your presentation should be scheduled to occur sometime between Weeks 9 and 10) and location for your presentation.
Your written assignments must follow APA guidelines. Be sure to support your work with specific citations from this week's Learning Resources and additional scholarly sources as appropriate. Summary of a Project
Topic: Social Determinants of Health
Introduction
In most developed and developing nations, the
re exist less well-off individuals whose life expectancies is shorter because of exposure to more ill conditions compared to rich people. The existence of such disparities is not only important in showcasing social injustices of a nation; they are also powerful indicators of health standards of a given country. In particular they have led to the discussion of what is commonly referred to as social determinants of health. Discussions on the topic have become a national concern in many states (Wilkinson & Marmot, 2003, p. 7). This publication addresses some of social determinants of health in a nation. It targets policy makers and health officials in different institutions as its primary audiences. Suitable locations for sharing the information contained herein include government offices and local health departments. The mode of sharing the information is individual presentation and open discussions.
Major Social Determinants of Health
Stress, Bodies, and Illness
Prolonged or elongated stress exerts negative pressure on an individual affecting the well functioning of his or her biological system. Stressful living conditions forces individuals to experience difficulties in practising health living habits. In many nations, set health policies do not address stress and body related factors that comprise underlying causes of many adverse illnesses. Policy measures need to address possible causes of stress problems and not focus on symptoms. Effective mechanism of promoting health is to improve living standards of individuals in any given nation (Allen & Cota, 2010, p. 164).
Income and Its Distribution
It is evidently shown in many nations that the state of health position rises with the level of income an individual is entitled to. Low income deprives people whereas high income empowers them. Consequently, fairly distributed income levels among individuals eradicate health inequality as opposed to extreme disparities in income distribution. Thus inequalities in income and its distribution are among key health policies issues that need to be addressed by policymakers and governments (Mikkonen & Raphael, 2010, pp. 12-13).
Education
Education is one of the most social determinants of health in any given nation. Individuals who have attained higher educational levels tend to be richer than those whose educational level is ranked low. High educational levels enable one to learn of how to promote his or her health through self or individual actions. Acquisition of high education better positions individuals in adopting sophisticated skills that are beneficial to their health. Therefore, it is the responsibility of any given government to fund the educational system so that institutions can provide adequate curriculum for its citizens (Adamson & UNICEF, 2010, p. 6).
Job Security and Unemployment
Employment is a source of income, as well as a sense of identity. Unemployment results to psychological stress, social deprivation, and emulation of behaviours that prove dangerous to ones health. Unemployment is linked to mental and physical health problems such as...
