Improving Health of American Children
Efforts to promote early childhood development need to involve improving health of American children at their tender ages. But the question to ask is, what are the measures to undertaken and who is to be responsible for such initiatives. Perhaps, a good answer to this question lies within us. It is the mandate for each one of us to take the initiative of collaborative actions that aim at improving the lives of young ones. As Cole, Miller, and Chen (2009) note, improving health of children involve promoting the provision of factors that influence their psychological, behavioural, and biological development. Factors associated with such variables influence progressive and developmental processes of several critical medical illnesses that emerge as children age. Some of the methodological and conceptual approaches outlined by the authors that stir provision of factors that promote health of children include care coordination functions, and diagnosis and treatments of identified acute conditions. In addition, comprehensive child-disease examination, and interperiodic visits or additional screening in children need to be undertaken (Miller, Chen & Cole, 2009).
Care coordination functions start right at home and extend to health institutions. The family has to play a vital role in coordinating psychological, social, and mental care to a child. The authors argue that a responsible family ought to provide a child with adequate security, shelter, education, and clothing to prevent possible health issues associated with limitation in supply of such factors. It is the responsibility of healthcare practitioners to respond to emergency cases in children by diagnosing root causes of diseases in children once they are presented to them. Besides, they need to recommend periodic medical visits of children to determine their health progress. These factors, if well abided by, are likely to promote health conditions of children hence promote early childhood development (Miller, Chen & Cole, 2009).
The Childhood Roots of Health Disparities
Scientifically, it is argued that there is a positive relationship between origin of adult diseases and biological and developmental disruptions experienced by an individual in early stages of life. (Shonkoff, Boyce & McEwen, 2009) asserts that developmental and biological disruptions experienced in childhood affect ones’ health as he or she ages in two ways. The two ways are biological entrenching of difficulties during sensitive developmental periods, and cumulative damage over time. They note both cases are accompanies by a lag of...
