How does the drug use in this company affect the coworkers, safety, and company production?
Ans1. Liquor addiction, indulgence in drugs and alcohol can lead to numerous expensive as well as complex issues for organization where such activities are allowed or even for the employees who perform such activities during the office hours. For instance, organization may incur several loss in accounted man-hours since there would be loss in productivity, high probability of injuries not just to themselves but also to other around them and setting a wrong precedents for other in the company. Furthermore, problems can escalate tremendously for the company as such practices might cause loss of their goodwill which is built after work of many years, damage to the reputation and well as building a toxic workplace at work. As per the research conducted by the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information (NCADI) there is whooping loss of US $200 billion per year to the organizations in the United States because of alcohol addiction and other drug related abuse by the employees.
Furthermore, drug abuse by some employees in the company have numerous hidden problems associated with it. With reference to “Working on addiction in the workplace”, (Kelly, J. F., 2017). productivity is compromised since there is absenteeism of the employees from work or developed illnesses, reluctance to take critical aspects of the work when required and creating wrong examples in the work environment. Some employees might get involved in these bad habits magnifying the costs to the company in direct form since it affect the bottom-line as well as in indirect form since it hampers the moral working in the organization. Working under the influence of drugs there can be problems to other employees since safety is not guaranteed while working that may cause causalities, life threating incidents especially working in a manufacturing set-up. Moreover, other employees may also be subjected to violence and harassment in the workplace if the organization allows such workers to wok under the influence of alcohol and drugs
What is the likely drug being abused by the three workers under suspicion?
Ans2. Taking reference from “The determinants of substance abuse in the workplace”, (Gracia, F. E., 2002) contingent upon the activity, a few workers might be bound to abuse or misuse drugs more or develop addiction towards drugs and alcohol than the employees who perform different activity or let's say work in general morning shift. To a limited extent, this can be elaborated by nature of job like in manufacturing set-up there is higher frequency of injury causing pain and employees can opt to drugs for getting relief from the pain initially as a medical prescription however, later it can become a habit.
As mentioned in the scenario, during the lunch hour, that starts at 3:30 AM, all these workers, cross the street to an all-night diner. They are found engaging with an unknown man whose appearance gives suspicious as well as the motorcycle jacket with local gang colors dose incline us to think that he is the drug dealer. All the employees along with this suspicious men do not eat, but only have coffee. Employees pays cash to the man with the jacket and he hands one of the three men a small package. When the man with the motorcycle jacket leaves, he mounts a motorcycle and rides off. The three employees go to the men’s bathroom in the diner. They are in the bathroom for almost 10 minutes. When they come out, they are boisterous, agitated, and overly animated with their movements.
After studying the actions of the employees, it can comprehended that these three employees are taking Maryjane might be combined with weed as well. This creates change in personalities of employees under the influence. Not only it creates monetary problems for employees in future other effects of marijuana includes low performance at work, disable body actions and coordination, problem in concentrating at work, memory loss, agitation, inability to solve current problems and different feelings from time to time.
