Scenario: Valentine is an 85 old lady and has just been diagnosed with dementia- she is a very sociable lady. She is also the chair for a charity for which she is in charge to prepare a presentation for the charity AGM. She has a set routine of waking up early to attend to her various activities during the day. She is getting more frequently disorientated specifically with the time and the day, this is affecting her self-esteem, self-care, emotionally she has been feeling very unsettle by the impact of having dementia, and safety as her sons have concerned because their mother has been found wandering trying to find her way back home. She has also left her home rather too early or has gone out late at night for no apparent reason. This has been confirmed with the care worker who had arrived to prepare her breakfast but Valentine was out already, which means that medication and as a result she also has missed meals. AC3.3 Using the same scenario Evaluate (positive and negative) the benefit for Valentine to use assistive technology. for users e.g. autonomy and independence, reducing risk, access to information, precision or accuracy. Positive impact in using assistive technology for Valentine: Empowering/ autonomy and independence It will counteract the impact of dementia on her personality such as low self-esteem, Empowering her dignity by giving her more control decide for herself, for example: The talking clock illustrated in L03.2(enclose picture) would enable her to restore her abilities to function independently, and wake at the right time, this will be achieved as the talking clock will enable Valentine to relate to her sensory memory rather than cognitive as the talking clock has a colour coded system that she visually could identify and relate to make the right choice by staying in and also the talking clock could prompt her throughout the day to support her orientation. Limitation: if the clock is not monitored it could stop working it would display the wrong time and make Valentine more confused A voice alert would also alert Valentine’s to get ready for her various activities, she has to attend on a specific day. Also it could remind her of the daily routine task she has to do for her self-care. Limitation: that if the device is not automatically put back on the charger, it will cease to work suddenly, this could also trigger panic and more confusion for valentine. Health and safety reducing risk She has been feeling very unsettle by the impact of having dementia, and safety as her sons have concerned because their mother has been found wandering trying to find her way back home. To prevent risk of being lost the tracker will help Valentine to be located before she gets unsettled and her sons will also feel reassured. Precision/accuracy Another tracking device such as mini GPS tracking device will also send an alarm when picking up from a sensory level (rapid pulse) and send automatically to the family, care home that Valentine needs urgent assistance, Precision/accuracy The specific medication dispenser that will provide health and safety will open at the right time, specifically for valentine, with the right dosage, so she could medicate herself without missing. And also a voice reminder could also prompt her with the right time, for when she has to take her medication. The voice reminder could also support her health by prompting her to remind her to take her breakfast at the right time. Access to information to support valentine in her early dementia, to prepare her presentation and also to attend to various activities an Iphone Smart phone with imported pictures of her various activities location she could visually identify to have access to, examples; timetables, events. If is not charge when the battery signal is on, any social events could be cut off suddenly it could create valentine’s aggravation
