Saults and Cowan (1996) assessed the development of temporal decay in working memory. They test First and Third graders, as well as adults. Participants played a picture matching game and at the same time heard words over headphones. Occasionally, the picture matching game was replaced with a picture that matched the last word that they heard. What did they find?
There was a gradual decline in how long we could maintain information in working memory with age.
There was a gradual increase in how long we could maintain information in working memory with age from First grade until adults.
First and Third graders maintained the words in working memory for the same amount of time before they decayed.
Information decayed in Third graders after just 1 second.
