Role-play a situation that involves a supervisor asking supervisees to get involved in therapeutic situations that are beyond the scope of their training and experience. One student in class can play the role of a persuasive supervisor who thinks students will learn best by “jumping into the water and learning how to swim.” The supervisor can ask trainees to work with a family, lead a therapy group alone, or work with abused children. After the role play, discuss the ethical and clinical issues involved with a focus on ways to deal with inadequate supervision.
