Riordan Manufacturing

Riordan Manufacturing is a global plastics manufacturer employing 550 people with projected annual earnings of $46 million. The company is wholly owned by Riordan Industries, a Fortune 1000 enterprise with revenues in excess of $1 billion.

Its products include plastic beverage containers produced at its plant in Albany, Georgia, custom plastic parts produced at its plant in Pontiac, Michigan, and plastic fan parts produced at its facilities in Hangzhou, China. The company's research and development is done at the corporate headquarters in San Jose. Riordan's major customers are automotive parts manufacturers, aircraft manufacturers, the Department of Defense, beverage makers and bottlers, and appliance manufacturers.

History

The company was founded by Dr. Riordan, a professor of chemistry, who had obtained several patents relative to processing polymers into high tensile strength plastic substrates. Sensing the commercial applications for his patents, Dr. Riordan started Riordan Plastics, Inc. in 1991.

Initially, the company's focus was on research and development and the licensing of its existing patents, but in 1992 Dr. Riordan obtained venture capital which he used to purchase a fan manufacturing plant in Pontiac, MI. At that time, the company's name was changed to "Riordan Manufacturing, Inc." In 1993, the company expanded into the production of plastic beverage containers when it acquired a manufacturing plant in Albany, GA.

The company's most recent expansion took place in 2000 when it opened its operations in China. At that time, the entire fan manufacturing operation was moved from Michigan to China and the Pontiac, MI facility was retooled for the manufacture of custom plastic parts.

SAP – GLOBAL EFFECT & RESULTS OF FAILURE
Global connectivity
As the internet spreads its reach, organizations started recognizing its potential and its scope for
their business expansion. The recent increase in network connectivity services has led to the
develo
pment in globalization of organization’s offering. Corporations are now able to run 24 x 7.
Many information systems contributed to this trend. But SAP rose as the most important among
them.
In this paper, we shall see how SAP facilitates an organization in connecting with its different
spots and hence giving it a global presence worldwide. It provides corporates an open interface
which helped them to quickly interconnect with their different information systems. Thereby
decreasing the cost of merger and acquisition. This result in affecting the supply chains of the
organizations. This is so because nature of supply chains has changed due to the global presence
of SAP system. SAP gives a system via which companies are having more control over the
suppliers. By controlling the supply chains, companies are not able to reduce the cost
significantly. For example, Apple was able to produce iPhone at relatively because of this
controlling.
For many companies, SAP applications are mission critical. It is so because it operates many
business processes on which business runs. For example: SAP applications help organizations to
establish relationships with customers, check for levels of manufacturing and managing
relationships with suppliers. For hundreds and thousands of businesses across the world, SAP
applications work on complex information; coordinate with other systems on business lines and
divisions.
Different modules of SAP together give it a global presence worldwide. For e.g. payroll module
allows corporates to monitor their employees’ attendance records, tax calculations, and
generation of pay checks from anywhere. The interface provided by SAP, does not change with
location. Thereby giving users a sense of connectivity.
Result of failures
Sudden organization change: ERP systems no matter how advanced they have become are still
known to be extremely rigid. They’re not very flexible in terms of inclusion of new business
process or new business integration. During the event of mergers and acquisitions sometimes it
would demand to re-implement the system right from scratch. Also, if new policies have been
introduced which changed the way the company does business then the system would find it
difficult to accommodate that change. So any sudden change of a business structure or a new
introduction of policies or in the event of acquisitions, the existing ERP system would find it
difficult to adjust and could result into a failure of the whole system.
