Richard Palmer, a 19-year-old university student, has come to the health clinic. He states that he gets cold sores at least six to eight times per year. He informs the nurse that the cold sores usually start with lip pain or tingling, often followed by small, painful, fluid-filled blisters on a raised, red, painful area of his lip. The blisters usually last 2 to 3 days in duration then form yellowish crusts that slough off to reveal pinkish skin. With his final exams coming up, Richard admits to feeling stressed. He also works part time serving at a local restaurant to help meet the expenses of college. Like other college students his age, Richard eats on the run and seldom sleeps more than 4 to 5 hours per night. His weekends are even more hectic with the job, school, and social activities. Richard requests something to help rid him of the existing cold sore immediately.
