Summary of Educational Structure and its Evolution
The American
Educational System is very varied. Before entering higher education, students in America have to complete a total of 12 years of primary and secondary schooling. Primary education begins at 6 years of age and continues for 5 years after which children traverse to secondary school. Upon completing middle school and junior high, students get their certificate of graduation from high school making them eligible for higher education. Entry into university or colleges is based on GPA or grade point average which measures student’s academic achievement. Students typically complete two years of prerequisite courses and then major in a subject studying it for further four years becoming graduates. American colleges allow changing majors. Further education to acquire Master’s degree requires attending a GRE exam. Doctorate or Ph.D. further requires study of 3 to 5 years.
