Review the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease in which antibodies to ribonucleoprotein particles are implicated in the development of chronic inflammation. The clinical presentation of SLE includes swelling of joints, fever > 100°F, hair loss, nose or mouth sores, and skin rash following sun exposure.
