Currently, I work as an assistant Town Clerk in a city hall. The office is split into two sections; vital statistics and land records, I work in the vital statistics section. Both sections contains confidential information and records that are over 100 years old. These records must be treated with care as they are the original records. One could argue that the employees would have an obedience loyalty for this office because of the original records. These are the original records of every person who was born, married, died in this city and keeping these records safe is more valuable than anything else. If the record is misplaced, lost or stolen, someone’s confidential information is at stake and we wouldn’t be able to provide certified copies for that individual if needed. However, I would imagine that all employees (including myself) in the office are free agents.
To me, I find my job boring. I am the youngest one in the office by at least 30 years and I just started earlier this year. All other employees have been there for 15 years or more. The customer service portion of the job is the only thing that makes or breaks my day. However, I accepted this position because of the pay and the benefits. I am very content with the salary along with being part of a union and having very good benefits being a city worker. The pension is one of the best offers the job provides and it is the main reason (I think) everyone works here for. By the end of the day, all employees in the office are dying to get out. The job may be boring, but the employees here finds value in the job because it serves our own interest.

Considering my career now in health care, I would say most of the employees are free agents. If i had to look at it from a scale of obedience loyalty to free agency, i cant pick the option in between of balanced loyalty because i do believe most of my co workers are in it for the good pay and decent job security. If another health care facility was to offer a higher salary with equal or better benefits i'm sure any of my coworkers would put in their notice letter and move on for the better, including myself.
Very often doctors leave to start their own practice. A lot of younger doctors and nurses stay to gain experience before going to a more prestigious medical facility if they are hired or to the ER. There a few employees that I know love their job and wouldn't leave but they are already very high and established in the organization. If any of that went away they would leave too if something else better was available. As for most of the clerical assistants and lab techs etc. are satisfied with good pay and benefits but no loyalty to the company itself and it's not even in a bad or negative way. Money is the main motivator, most of us are middle class and rent/mortgages are expensive as ever in NYC. I believe most do like their job and the environment is good, but if something else were to come up with better pay and it was in the same field, majority would go for it.
