Respond as quickly as possible when spoken to, and take the time to listen. Taking time to really listen to a child is sometimes very diffi cult to do. If yo u do not have time to listen to what a child has to say, let the child know that you are interested and will be able to attend more fully later. Then, be sure to do so. For example, Mr. Wardlich had begun reading a story aloud to the class when Carrie announced that she was going to Florida during spring break. Mr. Wardlich told her that she could tell him about it when the children were working on their penmanship, but that now it was time to read a story.
