Respect children’s viewpoints about situations as well as their coping modalities. This does not mean that you will always agree with how they are handling their problems, but it is where empathy on your part will be important. It will enable you to see the stressor through the child’s eyes. Moreover, a holistic look at the stressor in terms of what other demands the child and family are facing is necessary to avoid simplistic “solutions.”
