Microsoft Word - 2021.2 AE 1B Research Essay - Task Advice.docx ASSESSMENT TASK ADVICE SHEET Academic English 700056/900021 Term 2 2021 Research Essay Overview The research essay task is worth 20% of the overall marks for this unit. It should be 1,000 words in length and be based on the essay plan. You will be given an essay topic, which is to be written in the persuasive analytical genre. The essay is to be submitted through Turnitin by 11:50pm on Sunday 8 August 2021 – the end of week 6. Assessment description This task assesses the learning outcomes 1 (critically read, analyse and make meaning from academic texts), 2 (identify and summarise the main points of arguments), 3 (locate and cite arguments and evidence using the conventions of academic research), and 4 (produce a well-structured, logical, coherent and cohesive response to writing tasks using appropriate academic language structures). Guidelines The essay question is: 'Resilience is the most important factor in academic success. Do you agree?' If you are a repeating student, you must not submit an essay from a previous term. Please talk to your teacher. You need to include a minimum of 3 current academic sources (such as books or recently published journal articles). One of your sources may include the supplied text but you must have at least 2 other sources of your own. In your essay, you must use a citation every time you raise an idea, opinion, or provide evidence that is not your own. The minimum required number of citations depends on the number of supporting arguments you are using in your essay. For example, if you have 2 supporting arguments, you will write 2 body paragraphs, so you need to include at least 6 citations, that is, at least one for each argument, counter-argument and refutation. No more than 10% of your essay length should consist of direct quotations. You may discuss the essay question with others, and you may use some of the same resources. You must, however, plan, write and edit your essay INDEPENDENTLY to avoid allegations of collusion. Marking criteria When marking the essay task, the following criteria will be assessed: • Use of persuasive analytical structure • Development of persuasive arguments • Use of evidence • Quality of written expression • Use of in-text citations • Accuracy of reference list • Compliance with style and formatting guidelines Style and formatting You must include a title page with your essay that shows: • Your name • Your student number • Your teacher’s name • The title of your essay • The word count (number of words you wrote, excluding title page and reference list) • The referencing style you are using. Note – if no style is chosen, the Harvard style will be assumed Use Times New Roman, 12-point font with double line spacing, standard margins and black ink only. You must include a reference list using the WSU Harvard referencing style (APA if you are a Health Science student) on a separate page at the end of your essay. Penalties A penalty of 10% will be deducted from your final mark for texts which are outside the range of plus or minus 10% of the stipulated word length. The word length does not include the title page or reference list. Penalties for plagiarism will be applied based on the extent of matching as identified by Turnitin after adjusting to exclude small matches, the Title Page, the Reference List, in-text references and any other matches (text) that do not constitute plagiarism. A penalty of 10% per calendar day applies for submissions made after the due date and time unless an extension has been granted. Additional Notes You should choose your topic and begin your reading and note-taking as early as possible. As this is a research essay, your writing should reflect the research you have conducted by presenting an in-depth understanding of the topic and providing academic evidence to support your arguments. Search in libraries and online databases for suitable material, e.g. books or peer reviewed journal articles plus material supplied by your teacher and stored on vUWS. It is highly recommended that you submit your essay through Turnitin and check for matchings at least once before the final submission date, as penalties for poor paraphrasing are severe. “Essay Plan Template” “ Name Karishma kumar Student number 20233945 Teachers name Dalal Oubani, Deborah Cronholm Title 'Resilience is the most important factor in academic success. Resilience is the most important factor in academic success, this was a study to prove that students with a high score in resilience achieved a higher GPA. It was studied by an online survey that was emailed to all the dental students in the U.S. the resilience is considered as a vital part in the academic success as it focuses on the good educational achievement of the students despite the several adversity they face. If the student would not be resilient they would easily get depress from the several adverse situations they would acknowledge and witness in their life and academics. As in the academic career the students witness several things whether it is the failure or undesired results as well, in such case if they would not be resilient it would make things more difficult for them.
