THE QUEEN This is the famous (and sometimes infamous) Queen Elizabeth. To date, there has not been a female ruler quite like her. Research who she was, when she ruled, and the importance of her legacy. What was the Elizabethan era? Why is it so important? Write a short biography (short paragraph or minimum of 10 bullet points) below this image. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S ROMEO AND JULIET One of the most important skills you need to develop in English class is how to formulate an excellent thesis statement. You will be challenged to present this skill in English 20, English 30, and most definitely in post-secondary. Remember, a thesis statement is one sentence that sums up the theme (central idea) of the text. It is the main idea that you defend throughout your entire essay. Your thesis is the heart of your essay, everything else follows the thesis (your proof defends your claims which prove your thesis). Remember, formulating a thesis statement takes work! There are no shortcuts. Formulate, edit, revise, and polish your final thesis statement. TOPIC + THEME = THESIS · THESIS should include author and title · The purpose of the THESIS statement is to set up the essay, so the reader knows what will be explored throughout the essay. · THESIS statement should be ONE sentence (a complex sentence with a subordinate clause). · Remember to use the present tense (The author states…) NOT the past tense (The author stated…) and definitely not the progressive tense (The author is stating…) · No personal pronouns in your theme or thesis! Ever! · Key words you can use in your thesis: The author asserts / declares / argues / states / defends / advocates / claims / suggests / proclaims / demonstrates / proves / insists / illustrates / reveals / proposes / communicates / conveys / expresses / stresses / etc. YOUR TASK Formulate three thesis statements. Go over the following three topics. Figure out the theme of the play that corresponds to each topic. Then, formulate a thesis statement for each one. ESSAY TOPICS 1. Both Romeo and Juliet express suicidal impulses that relate to the overall theme of rushed young love. Does Shakespeare seem to consider a self-destructive tendency inextricably connected with love, or is it a separate issue? Why do you think so? THESIS: 2. Discuss the relationships between parents and children in Romeo and Juliet. What are the interactions like between children and parents? How does this affect their behaviour, choices, and ultimately, their endings? THESIS: 3. Apart from clashing with Tybalt, what role does Mercutio play in the story? Is he merely a colourful supporting character and a brilliant source of comic relief, or does he serve a more serious purpose? THESIS:
