Chapter 2: Literature Review
2.1 Introduction
A literature review is a comprehensive and structured summary of prior research works on a specific topic. The purpose of literature review is to gain knowledge about the topic from the previous research works. In addition to that, it guides the researcher regarding progress of the current research work. The main purpose of literature review is to gain knowledge and information about a topic. It is important as it guides the researcher regarding how to proceed with the research work as well as identifying the areas to be focused on.
2.2 Objective 1: Environmental Sustainability within the Tourism Industry
According to Jones, Hiller and Comfort (2016), the tourism industry contributed £145.9bn (7.2%) to the GDP of the UK. In terms of number of visitors, the UK ranks 7 across the globe. The size of the tourism industry of the UK indicates its importance to the UK economy. However, if the tourism industry is not managed effectively, it can have a negative impact on the environment. There are three pillars of sustainability, which are ecological, social and economic. As noted by Ertuna, Karatas-Ozkan and Yamak (2019), the primary motive of Sustainable Tourism Development is creating a balance between the economic, cultural and social aspects of the nation. A number of steps have been taken by the government to ensure that there is an increase in tourism as it is a major source of revenue for the country. However, due focus has also been put on ensuring that the development does not compromise with the environmental sustainability.
As commented by Xue et al. (2017), environmental Sustainability in the Tourism Industry refers to the increase in tourism business without having a negative impact that degrades the social and environmental contexts in which tourism occurs. There should be no negative effect on the culture, flora and fauna, quality of life of local public and others. Conventional tourism policies solely focus on attracting tourists from across the globe. However, Sustainable Tourism focuses not only on economic aspects of tourism, but also on the social and ecological aspects. With the increase in tourism, the pressure on biodiversity is increasing, due to which steps are required to be taken to manage the issue.
Across the globe, various animals are almost on the verge of extinction; still they are kept at various tourist spots and other places for attracting the tourists. Increase in tourism also leads to an increase in litter and other pollutant materials, thereby leading to an increase in the pollution level. Increase in tourism also requires increasing requirements for water and other natural resources. Therefore, effective management of tourism activities is the need of the hour and the same is possible through sustainable tourism activities. As noted by Sourvinou and Filimonau (2018), environmental sustainability within the tourism industry revolves around the idea of an effective coordination between the financial, cultural and ecological aspects of tourism. In order to increase the revenue from tourism, the culture and the environment should not be put on stake and the government and various agencies have been actively taking steps for ensuring sustainable tourism development.
2.3 Objective 2: Sustainability and its impact on business employability
As per the data provided by the World Travel and Tourism in 2015, the tourism industry had created 1.7 million jobs (3.6 percent of total employment) across the globe (International Labour Organisation, 2016). Tourism is one of the most important sectors across the globe in terms of revenue, employment and any other parameters. Environment sustainability will surely have an impact on the business employability. Since Sustainable Tourism Development ensures a more sustainable and socially responsible tourism and decent work in the sector. As commented by Hassard et al. (2017), the improvement in employability can be ensured by strengthening the link between the tourism sector and other related sectors in the supply chain. Related sectors in the supply chain involve transport, handicrafts and others.
Reinforcement of initiatives for promotion of employment creation at the local level, including rural areas contributes to poverty reduction and development of rural areas of the society. Development of the culture of specific areas by investing in vocational and local cultural developmental activities also leads to employment generation According to Jones and Comfort (2018), sustainable tourism will lead to an improvement in the supply chain thereby leading to an increase in transportation facilities, hotels and other amenities for the tourists. The will require a front office as well as back office, which...
