SCHOOL TO PRISON PIPELINE: A DEBATE
School to prison pipeline exists and is a significant problem is today’s education system. As the name implies, this means that students are often directly led from schools to correctional facilities due to improper behavior. Although schooling systems claim that it is due to the improvement of students and due to deter them from anti social behaviors, more often than not it is seen that imposing zero tolerance policies and even overlooking positive behavior in youths that have a history of unsocial or anti social behavior has increased their bad tendencies. So where do we stand? School to prison pipeline policies start in the classroom itself, with presence of police in the school premises, inclusion of harsh tactics that can include even physical restraint and automatic punishments. Often suspensions and out-of-class time results contributing highly to the pipeline flow. However, the problem is more complicated than what meets the eye.
