Research proposal for education research and design
PowerPoint Presentation Your research proposal AED5001 Assessment Task 3 1 Assessment Task 3. Due Date Session 12, AET 23:59 Weighting 60% Length 4800 words Submission Dropbox 2 Overview Assessment 3 involves the development of a research proposal for a project and should be practitioner focused and is worth 60% of your final mark. The purpose of this task is for you to demonstrate that you understand the key concepts involved in developing and a research proposal 3 Details In this Assessment Task you are required to produce a research proposal which should contain the following: • Title Page: A title and introduction (overview and background or context for the study); • Literature Review: A referenced rationale for the study, in which appropriate literature is used to build the case for the research. The rationale will culminate in the research aims and research problem/question(s). • Research Paradigm: An explanation for choice of paradigm; methodology and research methods adopted, including reference to appropriate literature related to research methodology; • Research Design: An explanation of the research design that will be adopted to answer/explore the research inquiry/questions; • Sampling + Data Collection Techniques: A detailed discussion of data collection procedures (including details about the participant groups and selection if relevant); • Limitations: An indication of how considerations such as reliability, validity or trustworthiness will be addressed; • Data Analysis: A detailed discussion of data analysis and reporting; • Ethics: A discussion of ethical issues that may be relevant and how they will be managed; • Reflective Statement: A critically reflective statement; • References: A reference list containing minimum eight academic up-to-date peer reviewed references – please try to not write a paragraph without including a reference. Make sure that you use TurnitIn – be careful not to plagiarise by accident! Be aware of overusing quotes etc. 4 Introduction Introduction to the topic, Overview of the proposa l , Clear focus - the “so what?” ques tion of why i s thi s propos ed s tudy is important? You conduct reading in the area of research interest - this leads you to narrow down to a research topic - narrow down to a research question. Provide a well-defined rationale based on appropriate, current literature Present a case for the study based on literature from broad context moving to specific issue to be researched identifies the specific focus/inquiry to be researched Overview of Literature Research Paradigm Justification for research paradigm How do I answer this question? ONTOLOGY (truth and reality), EPISTEMOLOGY (Knowledge) AXIOLOGY (researcher values) Natural settings and the perspective of participants Quantitative vs Qualitative (Practitioner Research & Transformative Research) Trustworthiness (this is used instead of validity and reliability) Given my ideological orientation - how can I best research my question? Generalisability (idiographic generalisation - linked to grounded theory) Research Design Justification of research design Action Research - participatory or non- participatory Case Study - which type of case study? Ethnography Explanation of methodological approach, supported by literature – choices of paradigm, approach, study design. Rationale and critique of methodology choices as appropriate to answer the inquiry/questions Include Research Paradigm + Research Design justification Explanation of Methdology Sampling (how will you select your participants) What kind of sampling are you using and why? Purpose Sampling Accessibility over time Selection of cases - what is your selection driven by? Geography - travelling distance Participants - key informants and I also participants within case study (subject department) Systems (gov, Cath and Indep) What data collection techniques are you using? Justification for selection of data collection techniques Observation Interviews Questionnaires What forms of data analysis will you use to interpret your data? Justification of choice See Session 6 Data collection methods, including what data, how gathered, how sampled, participant management. Data analysis methods for systematic data evaluation – techniques and processes to develop findings. Details of how reliability, validity or trustworthiness will be addressed Choices supported by literature Explanation of how data will be gathered How will you work to ensure the ‘reliability’ and ‘validity’ of your research findings? How will ensure you act ethically? Discuss Limitations, strengths, weaknesses What are the potential ethical issues: What are the potential risks (e.g. physical, social, psychological risks to participants)? How will these be managed?
