Bioremediation of contaminated groundwater sites
Bioremediation is widely employed these days in verticals of industry & community to treat polluted soil and water bodies. Since bioremediation is an engineered technology which helps to modify the conditions of environment to favour microorganisms to detoxify inorganic (e.g.: - heavy metals) and organic (e.g.: - oil spill) contaminants. The bioremediation treatment is versatile as it can be employed above/below ground, tank storages, bio piles and even in in-situ (or) ex-situ applications. In recent years treating of ground water by in-situ application gained more interest as it is easy to adopt and low cost in operation which gives high efficiency in water treatment when compared to other applications/methods.
In-situ bioremediation (ISB) treating of groundwater is comprised of indigenous bacteria which is engineered to metabolize targeted contamination whose efficiency is increased by use of bio stimulants to the microorganisms. In order to perform this operation a selected strain of bacteria is added to the selected sites subsurface which is commonly called as bioaugmentation, in general bacteria survives by simultaneous oxidation/reduction reaction which was engineered to use to treat targeted contaminants.
