Emily Chester ENC 2135 Research Proposal As I’ve grown up, I have faced the challenge of being considered weaker than the male species. I feel this is due to societies norms and beliefs on how we view male and female. Though, gender roles have become more equal, I still question when we as a society we will fully act and treat male and females not only equal, but as a united group of people. It also brings me to question, how gender roles differ in other countries, and how gender social norms have changed over time? I feel compelled to research this issue because it has been presented all over the world for many years. During my time reading The Iliad, it showed me how long gender roles have been distinguished as male being dominate over females during ancient Greek times. Homer makes a clear point in showing that women were seen as objects, that were meant to be traded or stolen. Knowing this has showed me that equality has come a long way but is still an issue. Another reason I feel the urge to research this is because, throughout my life I have been and seen many females treated with a lower lack of respect than many males. For instance, today in China babies of the female gender have been thrown away in garbage dumps because they are seen as less superior to males. In an article written by Mark Litke he states, ‘Roughly 120 boys are born for every 100 girls.’ With this in mind, I want to try and voice my opinion that about gender equality. I want to bring forth to question, what do we have to do to get that equality we have been missing for centuries? How much has gender equality really changed over the years? What are we currently doing to show that equality exist?
