Research Paper #2: Drugs and the Brain

The purpose of this assignment is to deepen and extend your reading on the material covered in the drug chapter in your textbook.

1.Identify a drug that you’re interested in learning more about.

2.Go to the following websitewww.sciencedaily.com

3. Once there, click on the mind/brain tab. That will take you to the most current research in psychology.

4. Then go to the search box (while you’re still in the mind/brain tab) and type in the drug you’re interested in plus the word “brain”. For example, you could type “cocaine brain”. You must add the word brain or you will not get appropriate articles.

5. Select one of the articles that most interested you and address the following questions. Please note your report will be in a paragraph format, not numbered.

What was the purpose of the research?

a.Why was the research conducted?

b.What is the background or known/unknown about the topic?

What were the methods the researchers used?

c.Who were the subjects?

d.What methods or tools did the researchers use and how?

What were the results or findings of the research?

e.What happened to the subjects?

f.What was concluded?

What is the implication or meaning/value of the research?

g.How is this information valuable to science?

Include the full American Psychological Association (APA) reference.

h.Look at the bottom of the page and selected full APA reference. Then you will need to copy and paste at the end of your document.

You should be able to answer all those questions with the article you select. If the article doesn’t provide all that information then select another.

Also your summary/answers should not be copied from the article. Rather you are to read and then paraphrase in your own words. Of course you will need to use the technical words in the article, but just don’t repeat exactly what the author said. There are to be no direct quotes, names of the researchers, title of the paper, or location where the research was performed. If those are included points will be deducted.

It is imperative you proofread your writing before submitting to me as I will deduct points for spelling and grammatical errors.

Your work must have your name at the top and conform to APA style. That means

·Double spaced

·One inch margins top, bottom, left and right.

·Spell and grammar checked

Please remember to:

1. Not include titles of the researchers

2. Not include where the research was performed

3. Use past tense when describing the research

4. Do not reference other studies

5. Stay in order of purpose, methods and results

6. Avoid personal pronouns

7. Proofread your work and/or submit to Net Tutor (on left side of this page) for free expert proof reading (give them 24-8 hours turn around)

8. Do not include "I" or explain why you chose the article

9. Do not direct quote as your job is to paraphrase

10. Always include the full reference at the bottom of the page

Points will automatically be deducted for not following the above 10 items.

This is an EXAMPLE of what your research paper should look like here: (Summary, short, direct, format and informative)

Studies on Binge Eating

Scientists have discovered that female rats are much more likely to binge eat than male rats. Binge eating along with other eating disorders has long be discussed as being triggered by social and physiological pressure. However researchers were curious as to how rats could suffer from being too thin despite no pressure from society to be thin. They conducted this experiment by taking 30 female rats and 30 male rats and coating their food pellets with frosting. They then studied which rats binged more on the frosting. Female rats binged six times more than male rats. The researchers concluded that binge eating may be connected to the brain’s natural reward system. This discovery could ultimately help doctors in correctly

medicating patients who suffer from this eating disorder.
