OBJECTIVE



This activity should help education students understand how teachers can advance knowledge of teaching and learning through their own research. The more teachers know


about research, the more they can use their classrooms for finding new and better ways to help students learn. Such classroom-based "action research" is a powerful way to try out new methods and to discover and then share ways to help students. Knowledge of good research practice can also make educators intelligent consumers of the vast amount of information and success claims they will see.



BACKGROUND and KEY CONCEPTS



There are many ways to conduct research, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The primary forms of educational research aredescriptive, correlational, and experimental.The form a teacher chooses should be based on the sort of question she or he wishes to explore, and what is possible within the constraints of the setting. It is almost impossible, for example, to conceive of a classroom situation in which a true experimental design could be used. Developing a research orientation to classroom experiences can, though, make teachers far more effective in their work.



DIRECTED OBSERVATIONS/REFLECTIONS



(reading the "research" pages that follow will help you with this activity)




1. Identify a question you have about the effectiveness of a practice you observed in the YouTube video linked above,



and describe that practice and your question about it.


2. Describe methods you could use to investigate the effectiveness of those



practices. After you read the entire "Types of Research" information provided in this module,

you should concentrate on theAction Researchsection, which will help you with



how teachers can/should do research.


3. Discuss strengths and weaknesses of the method/s you have chosen.





Write your answers to these questions, and


reflect on why teachers will serve their students and their profession well by seeing themselves as researchers

. This assignment will be written in essay format (see example of the assignment).




Far more than with any other activity, there is a lot of reading in this section to help you with posing a research question. You will serve yourself well to read through the material, and to save this material for future reference. There will be classes in your future that require that you understand the basics of doing research.

Educational Research is more familiar and focused intensive process of carrying out scientific method of analysis. The main purpose of educational research is focused
upon scientific investigation and provide the solution in the field of education.
    Research in education is use of the methods of scientific analysis to produce information, needed to make improvement in educational planning, decision making teaching and learning, curriculum deployment, understanding of children and youth, use of instructional media, school organizations and school management. (Boykin 1972). A research or investigation directed to the discovery of some facts by careful consideration or study of a subject; a course of critical and scientific inquiry. (OED, 2001).
    You may not have arrived at such specific definitions but hopefully you will have begun to appreciate that research aims to overcome the limitations of ‘common-sense knowing' (Cohen et al., 2000: 3-5). The need of research activities becomes imperative, which will support education to achieve its goal and objective, rebuild confidence, adapt to cultural diversity , education for self-identity and individual realization, reestablish faith in human, moral and democratic value, bring about changes in racial attitude, achieving the goal of quality and relevance, and meet the challenges for future world of accelerating scientific and technological changes (Boykin 1972).
In England, action research forms a part of ‘Master-Level’ Pre service Education (Jakson 2009) and is also used as a mean of assessing teachers on master degree in teaching and learning (TDA 2009).
According to Pramodini and Sophia - 2012, there are four main type of Educational Research.
Historical Research: - It generate explanations, elucidations of circumstances, situation, environments and events that has been done is past.
Descriptive Research: - It provides information about the circumstances, situation and procedures that occurring in the present.
