Schizophrenia is a serious psychological disorder that is characterized by significant disturbances in thinking abilities, interfering with sense of self, language and perception. Schizophrenia often causes psychotic experiences like having delusions or hearing voices. The symptoms of the disease can go to the extent of impairing day to day functioning. Typically Schizophrenia begins in late adolescence or early adulthood. Individuals affected with Schizophrenia often have trouble differentiating between reality and fantasy, it is also difficult for them to manage and express normal emotions or make decisions. Their thought processes often become disorganized and they lack the motivation to take part in any activities. Patients often have delusions including hearing imaginary voices and believing that others are plotting against them.
People with Schizophrenia either suffer continuously or intermittently throughout their life and are often stigmatized by the people who do not have proper knowledge about the disease. Popularly, Schizophrenia is often confused with multiple or split personalities which is a totally different disorder. People suffering from Schizophrenia post no threat to others but themselves, aso symptoms can make them agitated, withdrawn or unresponsive and are more prone to committing suicide.
Symptoms
The severity and extent of symptoms vary from patient to patient in Schizophrenia. The ways in which it is manifested and progressed in individual depends on the time of beginning, duration and severity of symptoms which can be categorised as cognitive, negative and positive. These categories all fall under improper brain functioning. Remission and relapse cycles are common, individual can get worse better and worse again over time.
· Positive symptoms - Positive symptoms include hallucinations, thought disorders and delusions. Psychomotor problems affecting movement in the individual is often considered to be a symptom under this category. Inner voices, hallucinations and delusions are together known as psychosis which can also be the symptoms of other mental disorders like bipolar disorder. Hallucinations can cause the patient to see, hear, smell or feel something that does not exist.
