Given: The elevation of the shearwall in Fig. 12.C. The lateral wind force and the resisting dead load of the shearwall are shown on the sketch. The uplift force at the bottom of the wall is anchored to the foundation by a metal strap embedded in the concrete foundation. The 10-gage ASTM A653 Grade 33 steel strap is attached to the shearwall chord (two 2 4s) with 10d common nails. Lumber is Hem-Fir.= 1.0. Assume that the steel strap is adequate.
Find: Determine the number of nails required to attach the metal anchor strap to the chord using ASD procedures. Consider the resisting dead load when calculating the anchorage force.
