Case assignment

Read this articles, supplemented if you wish with material from the optional readings and perhaps the supplementary background as well, and even other outside reading you might find by yourself to be useful. Then write a 3-5 pages

critique of
the use of multiple regression analysis in one of three papers listed above.

Case assignment expectations

A critique is a review and commentary on a particular article or piece of research. It is not necessarily critical in the negative sense, although you may need to comment negatively on some aspects; both positive and negative aspects should be treated. Just because something appears in print, even in an A-list journal, does not make it free from possible errors or beyond criticism; nothing should be necessarily taken at face value. Your informed commentary and analysis is as important as your summary of the material in the article -- simply repeating what the article says does not constitute an adequate critique. You are also expected to use the terminology of regression correctly and clearly.
In this case, your critique should address at least the following issues, as well as any other points that you find relevant and worthy of comment:

  • A brief summary of the paper: its purposes, methods, and reported findings

  • The use of regression in the data analysis, and its relation (if any) to other kinds of analytical and/or statistical methods

  • The nature of the data used, and the degree to which the data met the requirements for regression as described by Garson (n.d.) and Porter
    et al (1981).

  • The appropriateness of the interpretations of coefficients developed in the analysis

  • The overall applicability of the Porter
et al. (1981)'s critique to this study – does their approach call it into question, or does it manage to evade their critique? How, in either case?

  • Your overall assessment of the utility of regression as an analytical strategy in the kind of research you are contemplating for your dissertation and beyond, and your ideas for overcoming the problems raised for this strategy by Porter
    et al.

Remember, this is an
applied statistics
course. Thus, explaining the statistical tools, interpreting coefficients, and understanding the properties of the data analysis are particularly important, and need your careful thought and comment, not just general or generic observations.
You are expected to present your critique in appropriate academic form and language, with citations to the readings where needed.

I have attached the pdf file of the article. You will find it at Page 42. Thanks!

 A brief summary of the paper: its purposes, methods, and reported findings.
Summary of Paper:
The objective of this paper is to understand the development of political climate at sub-
organizational level. It considers a department of university for study purpose. This study
first discussed the na
ture and role of conflict and explored the role of task and relationship
conflict.
Further this study examining politics at a department level of University by identifying
catalyst to politics and theoretical effects of multi-level antecedents on the political climate
of department.
The multi-level antecedents covered in the paper are paradigm development, role ambiguity
and rank heterogeneity. With the help of hypothesis test the paper examine the level of
relationship between antecedents, conflicts and political climate.
After analyzing the available results of past research on the above topic and identifying the
missing cases, the data has been collected to test the hypothesis, data collected from 12
departments of 6 Canadian universities having very active research profiles. 626 full time
track assistant, associate and full professors participated in the survey. Following are the
measures taken by the researcher-
1. Past research suggested the presence of three distinct conflicts known as
task, relationship, and process conflicts. However the result of a
confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) suggested using two dimensions of
conflict defined as task and relationship conflict. The result is further
verified by examining agreement of group in each department on
departmental task and relationship conflict as well as using ANOVA test.
2. Department politics measurement is based on the response of
Respondents on a five point scale which describes the practices of
department regarding each departmental activity.
3. Paradigm development ranks of academic departments and members used
is based on rankings of previous research.
4. Measurements of Role ambiguity and role conflict are based on the
response of Respondents using a 7-point scale ranging from strongly
disagree to strongly agree.
5. Rank composition was obtained from annual calendar of the universities
however measurement of heterogeneity was unavailable for departments.
6. Size of department size and demographic variables were used as a
controlled variable.
7. Following four factors role ambiguity, role conflict, department conflict,
and politics climate used for factor analysis.
To test the hypothesis, an analysis at department level as well as at cross level have been
performed. The following are the conclusions from the analysis-
1. Relationship conflict is more dominantly related to political climate levels
than is task conflict. The contribution of task conflict to political climate is
negligible, however it facilitate the political climate due to its strong
association with relationship conflict.
2. Rank heterogeneity present in a department is not significantly associated
with...
