Reflective Practice Essay
The assessment is due in Week 12 Friday 5th, October, 11:00 PM AEST.
This assessment accounts for 40% of your final grade. Essays that are submitted late will receive a late penalty of 2 points per day late. The assignment must be between 1500-2000 words in length. Two points will be deducted for the essays that are +/- 200 words.
The assessment must include a cover page that contains your name, student number, resident campus, assessment title, and lecturer and/or tutor.
The assessment must double-spaced; 11 Point; Times New Roman The assessment must include 10 academic references. You must use the APA reference style.


This is an essay and should not include headings.
The objective of this reflective essay is to summarize what you learned from the unit and how you believe your learnings could be applied by you in your future career goals.


Section one: For weeks one to ten you should identify one important or significant concept that you have learned about. You should define the concept and then explain why it is important to you in your current line of work. It is not enough to simply say that the concept is important, you will need to explain why.
Section two: Based on your discussion of the ten significant concepts you should provide a literature review of one of the concepts. So for example, if you found that listening was an important communication concept then you should provide a literature review on the current academic understanding of the importance of listening within the work environment.
Section three: Lastly, you will need to discuss how two of the ten concepts could be important to your future career aspirations. Here you will need to identify where you wish to be in 5 years’ time, and then discuss how you think these concepts/skills will help you meet your career goal. It is important that you are specific as possible. Your essay should follow the following structure:


1. Introduction
a. Opening statement that introduces the topic
b. Background information that introduces the context,


significance and the purpose of the essay c. Preview of the structure of the essay
d. Thesis
e. Transition to section one

Introduction
Amongst the various management skills required for a successful career in any domain, certain aspects of business communication are imperative for employees irrespective of their position in the organisational structure. Whether the role is to manage, lead or follow others communication is of foremost importance with some of them being specific to particular industries but majority being universal across all work environments. The essay particularly outlines some of the key aspects of business communication from a general career perspective and the way these verbal or non-verbal aspects shape an individual’s problem solving, leadership, management, decision making and conflict handling capabilities. It also discusses the latest academic developments in one of the discussed concept followed by the importance of another two concepts with respect to my future career aspirations and goals. With diversity increasing in this global business scenario, effective communication skills are what are needed the most for both career and organisational development.
Weekly Concept-Defined and Applied
Communication as a professional competence refers to the understanding of appropriate models of the communication process, theories and patterns and the capabilities to use this knowledge in various organisational contexts. As stated by Powless and Schafer (2016), this also entails mastering the purposes of business communication, common misconceptions and principals, which are imperative for career growth. Developing communication knowledge, ability to use these methods with different individuals and adapting them to different contexts such as social, individual and cultural levels, enable smooth organisational working, growth and development.
Ethical professional communication in a business environment irrespective of the involved situation whether between managers and employees or customer and employees, refers to the exchange of information in truthful and accurate manner. As indicated by Pearson (2017), failing to implement ethical communication practices in a firm’s working environment can adversely impact organisational relationships as it directly signifies a lack of respect towards the other entity, puts a question mark of the individual’s personal integrity and other cause others to doubt our degree of reliability and credibility for all future occasions.
Written communication is the most commonly used way of transmitting information within and outside the organisation and normally contains procedures, rules, regulations and policies governing the style of writing, which must be made aware to the employees as per their relevance. As supported by Holmes, Zhang and Harris (2018), various ways of written communication like emails, reports, memos, manuals and newsletters serve as an evidence for the actions to be or have been taken and provides permanency of the records for future references. Written communication techniques are of great importance to clear discrepancies and convey urgent messages to stakeholders within or outside the organisation.
Academic or professional writing finds its place in carious industry domains and functions in forms of reports, memos, communication notes and letters. As noted by Nelson and Weatherald (2014), hese writings must clearly communicate the intent and purpose of information with the thoughts being efficiently organised for the receiver. In an organisational context employees with goods writing skills are perceived as more credible, capable, intelligent and responsible as compared to their peers whose writing works are poorly constructed, contains grammatical errors and lack a professional approach, hence this must be treated as a critical productivity skill at all levels.
Particularly in research-based organisations, employees are regularly expected to submit their findings in forms of professional reports where self-reflective essays and literature reviews are of great importance.
