Reflecting on his first year as a teacher, Mr. Beech was a little embarrassed at how little he understood the teaching and learning process when he began teaching. He remembered handing back a math test and admonishing his students with the following words. “Everybody in this room knew the test was today. I can’t believe not one of you passed it. All I can say is, you had better master these concepts before we get into the testing season. Thirty percent of the standardized test is on algebra. I know we did several chapters quickly this time, more than you were used to, but we have to finish this book. And, no, I will not let you retake this test.”

5. Explain the three types of knowledge Mr. Beech’s students probably had to use while taking the algebra test.

6. In addition to not overloading his students with new information, how else can Mr. Beech assist his students in understanding and remembering in the future?
