Analysis
Theoretical Approach to Education for Children
Over the years, based on different perspective of learning for greater masses, different education and teaching theories have developed, among them Montessori and Steiner theories are widely accepted, criticized and used so far.
Firstly, the Montessori teaching theory has been in use for more than a century for is simple and effective teaching principles. Montessori teaching theory is weaved around the scientific observation of children for educational purposes and learning. As stated by Saylor, McKenzine and Sacco (2018), the Montessori teaching theory propagates the idea that children learn in an environment where they are engaged in tasks, instead of just providing details only. In addition to the child-included learning tasks, the teachers provide liberty to the students and passively promote freethinking and innovation as well as give a scope of interaction between students of different ages. The fundamental idea that children learn fast and better, when they are given, choice of learning subjects and topic of their choice.
The Montessori teaching theory gives importance to the place where the teaching sessions take place, namely the classrooms, which in Montessori aligned schools tend to have beautiful classrooms, with light and air ventilation facilities. As mentioned by Livstrom, Szostkowski and Roehrig (2019), in cases of Montessori theory application, the teachers let children of different age groups to interact with one another, which make their interaction and hands on learning processes amplified.
Despite the positive sides of Montessori theory, the dependence on the child’s preferences, the lack of structural routine in the education system, make the learning as well as teaching process lack depth and consistency of formality, respectively. As identified by Trabalzini (2018), Montessori theory based school system setups are expansive, which makes it difficult to be set up in certain locations that lack resources. It is worth the mention that the Montessori teaching theory was majorly used in the past educational system, as the past perception of education was about catering knowledge, with less emphasis on the practical and intellectual development of students.
Secondly, in case of Steiner theory of education and teaching, the major focus unlike Montessori theory, tends to promote the creativity, intellect and artistic as well as practical skills among the students. As observed by Steiner, Grinstead and Press (2018), Steiner theory based schools have independent curriculum, which make them somewhat autonomous in terms of their teaching methods and subjective approach. In Steiner theory, the focus is provided to qualitative learning instead of quantitative.
In case of Steiner theory, the learning of the children is segregated into three major sections each having 7 years, namely the Moon Sphere, Mercury Sphere and Venus Sphere. The Steiner theory emphasizes the physical, emotional, intellectual and learning needs of the students, which makes the quality of learning wider in variety. Steiner theory, as affirmed by Rawson (2018), established the hypothesis that a child’s learning is deeply integrated with its emotional, cultural and social needs. Despite the shortcoming, Steiner theory of education presents a modern picture of the educational system, which gives ample emphasis on the practical and intellectual development of the students, instead of only theoretical learning and is therefore, a modern approach to education and learning.
Steiner theory gives importance to the creative learning for the development of personality of the learners, making them complete individuals, instead of just focusing on information provided...
