Introduction
Human Resource Management is a set activity within an organisation that aims at
managing and directing people in an organisation in an effective and structured manner towards
achieving the organisation goals. Human resource management focuses on the functions like
recruitment, selection, training and development, performance appraisal, compensation,
promotions, resignations (Braton & Gold, 2001). Globalisation is the „widening, deepening and
speeding up of worldwide interconnectedness in all aspect of contemporary social life, from the
cultural to the criminal, the financial to the spiritual‟. (Douglas & Craig, 1995) Many authors
have defined globalisation in many different ways, but the most acknowledged concept of
globalisation is that the economic integration increases due to greater free flow of ideas, easier
travelling and transportation, investment opportunities of capital. This in turn propels increased
trade and investment. Nations are gradually moving towards forming a borderless world. Thomas
Friedman calls Globalisation the “Flattening of our world”.
With globalisation, international human resource management has gained significance.
International human resource management is the set of activities that focuses on managing
human resources of an organisation at an international level to achieve the organisational goals
and gain competitive advantage over competitors nationally and internationally. It involves all
the human resource management functions done at international level and includes home country
employees, host country employees and third country employees (Armstrong, 2006). The

operating in multiple countries.

assembling, packaging and selling a limited menu of value-priced foods. The company primarily
is in the quick-service hamburger restaurant business. It is headquartered in the United States, the

largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurants having high brand recognition worldwide,
steady growth in global markets, and strong leadership. It operates in 119 countries through
34,000 restaurants worldwide and employing more than 1.7 million people (Official website of
McDonalds, n.d.). The business is divided geography-wise as US, Europe, Asia/Pacific, Middle
East and Africa (APMEA), Other Countries & Corporate (OCC) including Canada, Latin
America and Corporate. Either the restaurants are operated directly by the company or in the
franchise arrangements or joint venture between the local business people and the company.
