The Assignment Question Woolworths has been the largest supermarket chain in Australia for many years. However, its business and market dominance has been threatened by new comers, such as ALDI. To some, it is a classic story of David vs. Goliath. From a supply chain management perspective, compare the two firms and discuss (1) how and why ALDI could succeed in its invasion and (2) what Woolworths should improve in order to maintain its competitive position? In order to compare the supply chain performance of  the two companies (i.e., ALDI vs. Woolworths), you will need to research on the history of development, the challenges and issues they faced in the development process, and the different approaches they took to address these issues. The focus should be on how they ran their businesses and served their customers using logistics and supply chain management techniques as well as information technology. You are required to analyse the performance of the two firms along the following dimensions (each to be discussed in a separate section in the report) applying what you have learned from the first few book chapters: Supply Chain Management: Strategy, Planning, and Operation, Global Edition by Sunil Chopra 1. The three decision phases in a supply chain (i.e., how they run their supply chains); 2. The push/pull view of supply chain process (i.e., how they structure their supply chain); 3. Implied demand uncertainty, supply chain capabilities, strategic fit, and scope of strategic fit (i.e., how they ensure their successes); and 4. The use of the various supply chain drivers (, facilities, inventory, transportation, information, sourcing, and pricing) to achieve supply chain objectives (i.e., efficiency and responsiveness). Please note that you are expected to use the tools described in the book chapters, such as push/pull view, demand uncertainty spectrum, cost-responsiveness spectrum, and zone of strategic fit, etc. in your analysis to aid the discussion. In addition to the Covering Page(a page that properly provides the course number and title, assignment number, title of the case, student number, student name, and submission date), the report should include the following:      (a) Executive Summary (Summarise the cases and the findings of the analysis with conclusions in one page.)      (b) Table of Contents (List the sections and subsections with corresponding page numbers on a separate page.)      (c) List of Figures (List the figure numbers and captions, if any, with corresponding page numbers on a separate page.)      (d) List of Tables (List the table numbers and captions, if any, with corresponding page numbers on a separate page.)      (e) Summary of the Cases (Use your own words to give a brief summary of the cases in one page.)      (f)  Critical Success or Failure Factors Identified (Analyse the information provided in the articles to identify the factors leading to the respective success or failure of ALDI and Woolworths in one page.)      (g) Answers to the Assignment Question (Answer the assignment question by analysing the two firms, i.e., ALDI and Woolworths, along the four dimensions. You should address the four areas one by one on separate page with the proper headings. DO NOT MERGE EVERYTHING into a big paragraph or essay. Marks will be deducted if answer to the assignment question is not organised properly so that the reader cannot see clearly an analysis along the four dimensions as required. Make full use of the information in the articles and from other sources, if needed, for your analysis. Assessment is based on how thorough the analysis is, using the information provided in the articles and gathered from other sources such as report, journal articles, and Web pages (e.g., company homepages of ALDI and Woolworths), and how convincing the arguments are. YOU MUST SUPPORT YOUR ARGUMENTS WITH EVIDENCE from the articles and other sources.)      (h) References (Provide all the references used in the report in strict Harvard style.)      (i) Appendices (Attach all supplementary materials used, if any, as appendices to the report.) 2. Use summary tables, charts, and figures where appropriate to aid your analysis and discussion. The figures and tables should be inserted in the sections and subsections of the report immediately after they are mentioned instead of in the List of Figures and List of Tables. 3. Students can refer to the document entitled “Written reports and essays: Guidelines for referencing and presentation in RMIT Business” (Version 3.0, available at http://mams.rmit.edu.au/s9sx559hurvc.rtf(Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.)) for advice and tips on how to write proper reports and essays. 4. Introduction
This study compared the supply chain performance of the two companies (ie ALDI and Woolworths). This research includes research on the history of development, the challenges and problems they faced in the development process, and the different methods they took to solve these problems. The focus should be on how they use logistics and supply chain management technology and information technology to run their own businesses and provide services to customers. This study analyzes the performance of the two companies from the following aspects. The three decision-making stages in the supply chain (i.e. how they run their supply chain); a push/pull view of the supply chain process (i.e. how they build the supply chain); and implicit demand uncertainty, supply chain capabilities, and strategic fit The scope of the degree and strategic fit (ie how they ensure success); this report discusses the use of various supply chain drivers (, facilities, inventory, transportation, information, procurement, and pricing) to achieve supply chain goals (ie, efficiency and response) ability)
Compare the supply chain performance of ALDI vs. Woolworths
Woolworths Supermarket is the most outstanding retail industries in the New Zealand and Australian markets, and they also rank first in liquor retail (Morgan, 2019). Woolworths' main business area is retail. Retail is mainly concentrated in groceries and CDs and DVDs and magazines. In addition to groceries, Woolworths is also involved in the petroleum industry, hotel industry and grocery stores (Akhtar, 2016). The company has a huge distribution channel consisting of around 6,000 suppliers as well as approximately 3,300 retail stores (Morgan, 2019). The company is able to maintain inventory and supply in its stores through its efficient supply chain management system (Erdmann, 2013). The Woolworths SCM System used by Woolworths is derivative version of "Trade Stone's Commodity Lifestyle Management" to manage the supply chain.
In recent years, whether it is from actual management or business research, more and more attention has been paid to supply chain management. One company where SCM plays a key role is grocery retail business (Liberatore and Miller, 2012). To trade commodities that disappear within weeks or even days, a simplified inbound logistics process is required, as well as customer expectations (that is, to find the desired product in the store) and to reduce waste (that is, the product expires before the sale) Find the right balance between inventory management (Chanticleer, 2019). There are different business models in grocery retail, such as hypermarkets or discount stores. The main discount retailer is the German company "Aldi Sud" (Oliveira and Gimeno, 2014). Their main assets are to strictly focus on reducing the cost of the entire supply chain. However, in recent years, the increase of the Aldi has significantly slowed. Focusing on the microcontroller, this article will analyze its potential causes. To this end, first draw and analyze the current Aldi supply chain (SC) map. Apply secondary research to mirror the "as is" state with the best practice in the SCM to recognize gaps (Erdmann, 2013). The outcomes were then use to draw a better "to be determined" model to understand how Aldi rearranged its SC.
Summary of the Cases
The three decision phases in a supply chain (i.e., how they run their supply chains);
Supply Chain Strategy
At this level, the decision is generally made by management (George Nott, 2020). The decisions made takes into account components for example lasting forecasts or involves commodity prices that would be very costly if the price goes incorrect. It’s very significant to study market situations at this level (Hider, Guettinger and Kleidon, 2020). These decisions take into account the current and future situations of market. They constitute the structural layouts of supply chain. After preparing the layout, each task and responsibility will be laid out (Oliveira and Gimeno, 2014). These decisions may include deciding on the manufacturing of materials, the location of the industrial unit, which must be simple for the transporter, so that the transporter can load the material and dispatch at the location they mentioned (Ladd, 2016), the location of the warehouse for storing finished products or goods, etc.
Supply Chain Planning
Planning of Supply chain should be depends on supply and demand views. To know customer needs, market research must be conducted (Meyersohn, 2019). The second thing to considering is alertness and up-to-date data about the competitors as well as the strategies they use to meet consumer needs. As we all understand, several markets have unique needs and must be handled in various methods or ways (Oliveira and Gimeno, 2014). This stage includes all content, starting from the predicting market demands, in which market finished product is planned to be provided at this level. All workers or participants related to the business must strive to make the complete process or procedure as flexible as possible. If the SC design stage performs well in the short-term plan, it is considered successful.
Supply Chain Operations
The third and final decision-making stage includes a range of functional decision to be made immediately in minutes, or in days (Morgan, 2019). The goal of this decision stage is to minimize uncertainty as welll as performance optimizations. From processing consumer orders to providing the product to customers, this stage includes everything. For example, suppose a customer requests a product produce by your business (Tsai and Pawar, 2018). Primarly, marketing department was answerable for taking orders and forwarding them to the department of production moreover inventory department. Then, the department of production sends the required materials to the warehouse through the appropriate medium to respond to the customer's demand, as well as the distributor will send it to the consumer in a period frame (Oliveira and Gimeno, 2014). All sections engaged in this procedure require to working hard to improve performance and minimize...
