Journal 1: Encounter
    Passing begins with Irene w
ho is a protagonist. The story opens with Irene sorting her mails. She finds a letter in her pile similar to the one she received two years back. The letter was postmarked form New York City but without any return address. Irene knew this letter was from a friend from her childhood, Clare Kendry. Irene thinks of her childhood days recalling the memories she had of Clare. Claire as a child was calm and defiant and was always threatened by the violent behavior of her drunken father, Bob Kendry.Clare’s father died in a fight at saloon when Clare was only fifteen. The letter mentioned Clare’s desire to meet Irene again and Clare reminds Irene of “that time in Chicago”.
    To her surprise Irene one day meets Clare in Drayton sipping her ice tea. After Clare left after her father’s death there were rumors about Clare. They both discussed theirpresent lives to know about each other after twelve years. Clare decided to “pass” into the white society. After meeting Clare and knowing about her Irene has feeling of pleasure as well as irritation. Clare and Irene met each other again at Clare’s place where there was another childhood named Gertrude. Irene felt herself outnumbered as the other two women married white men and Irene married a black man. Clare introduces her husband John to both of her friends.
    When Irene was about to leave from Chicago back to New York she again receives a letter from Clare which thanked Irene for her visit and tolerating his husbands comments on racism. She also asks Irene for her forgiveness. Irene then decided never to see Clare again and if she does she will ignore her. Irene then turns her thoughts back to her life in New York City and her family.
Journal 2: Re-Encounter
    In second part of Passing, Irene again receives a letter from Clare stating her desire to meet Irene again. Irene has a feeling of angerseeing the letter and keeps the letter back.Irene wonders if Clare wanted to have connections with the black why didn’t she reveal her original identity in front of her husband. Irene’s husband Brian reads the letter and asks Irene if she would see Claire again to which Irene firmly said no. Irene then decides to write back to Clare and put an end to this matter.
    Irene then receives another letter from Clare in which she has asked Clare to send her response to the post office rather than to her home. Irene decides not to answer Clare’s letters. Irene then manages to gather herself back to her normal life with her sons. But one day Clare turns up to see Irene at her home. This was there re-encounter....
