Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space: An Analysis
In the article “Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space”,
Brent Staples has revealed a complicated appr
oach of a black man
towards the life in the white-dominated American society. A deep
reading of the piece can make a reader understand that Brent considers
himself to be an outsider in the American society on one hand, and on
the other hand he is also apprehensive about his own black identity.
It is a great article to read as in this article a reader is surely
going to feel the essence of double consciousness, a concept which was
advocated by Du Bois in a comprehensive manner.
Primarily, Staples’ realization that he is an outsider in the
white society of America is observable at the initial stages of the
article. He knows that for the white Americans he is an intruder, a
potential law violator, who is capable of inflicting terrible wounds
to a white not only physically but psychologically too. While stating
that “My first victim was a woman – white, well dressed, probably in
her elderly twenties” (“Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space”,
p.289), Staples actually is meaning to say that he like the majority
of blacks in America is considered to be potential perpetrators and
for a white woman a black African American is nothing less than a
potential rapist or brutal abuser. So, ironically, here Brent has
tried to state that it is not the woman who was his first victim but
it was he who was victimized by the outlook of the majority of the
rich white women.
