Read all readings for this module and research other articles or websites associated with the healing hospital paradigm. As you read, consider how this paradigm might influence your philosophy of caregiving. Any hospital with a healing component to its mission can be used as a resource.


Write an essay of 1,000-1,250 words in which you address the following:


1. Describe the components of healing hospitals and their relationship to spirituality.


2. What are the challenges of creating a healing environment in light of the barriers and complexities of the hospital environment?


3. Include at least one biblical passage or parable that you believe supports the concept of a healing hospital and provide rationale for your selection.

Spirituality has had varied definitions over the years. Most of the definitions seek to link spirituality to anything that relates to the human spirit. According to Mc Call (2004) adopts the definition “Spirituality is concerned with the transcendent, addressing ultimate questions about life’s meaning, with the assumption that there is more to life than what we see and understand. Spirituality can call us beyond self, to concern and compassion for others. (Fetzer Institute, 1999, p. 2) However, he further points out that in order to fully involve the human experience the following definition is more apt; “Spirituality is that which provides meaning, purpose, and connection for an individual, a group of individuals, a community, and/ or a culture.”
When it comes to the issue of spirituality and healing hospitals, the healthcare givers in the hospitals consider the emotional side. Chapman (2003) is of the view that people do not change into “one dimensional beings when they become patients” the patients emotional needs increase when the body is in a weak constitution. Chapman gives a model in which “Total Loving Care= Higher Standard.” In this view, there is the patient there is the disease and there is the humanity shown by the health care giver. Humanity in this model is the healthcare givers feeling about the disease.
To further elaborate Chapman states that hospitals that follow some sort of religious tradition cannot be said to be churches, however, they do need to portray a higher standard in terms of the services they offer and the principles via which they offer these services.
