David Walker’s Appeal and Douglass’ “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”
The independence of
America was declared on 4th July, 1776 and it was the US who celebrated the freedom on this day. The contrast to this story is the different side of the story which was written by Fredrick Douglas known as “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July”. Although America got its independence, the slavery remained a debate as the modern-day slavery still persists. It was in the year 1827, around 4000 African Americans paraded on the Broadway on the streets of New York for celebrating the end of slavery in US.
It was Douglass who was a famous abolitionist and was born in slavery in US. Douglass raised his voice on this issue on July 5th, 1852 when he was invited to speak in the Ladies Anti-Slavery Society of Rochester held in New York. He addressed around 600 audiences in the Corinthian Hall by acknowledging the people who fought for the independence were brave and great men. Later Douglass...
