Questions to think about for your summary of Chapter 8:What do we mean by gender stratification?What is patriarchy and how might a sociologist understand its causes?How gender roles are defined in the family and how does the fact that most women work outside the home in the United States affect these roles?What kinds of conflicts are developing in families that are directly related to traditional gender roles and the changes in the roles on women in society?How are men and women conditioned to be men and women from birth to adulthood in our society?Give a conflict theorist analysis of sexism and compare that analysis to a structural functionalist analysis. Be sure to think about the role of feminism in the comparison. What do we mean by age stratification?
This summary must be 2 complete pages. Any summary that does not meet that requirement will not receive credit. I have listed questions for each chapter in your syllabus. These questions serve as a guide and you do not have to answer every question in your summary. In general, if you have answered 6 of the questions in your summary, you have done enough. This summary should also follow standard essay format. do not want to see a summary that simply lists the questions and then answers them. tion refers to the inequalities existing among men and women regrading the privileges, power and wealth. It refers to the idea that men and women are not equal and the living experiences of the individuals depends upon their gender. Gender stratification also refers to the social ranking, where men are assumed to have a higher ranking than women.
Patriarchy and Its Causes
    Patriarchy can be considered as a social system, in which men primarily the father or the eldest male of the family holds the primary power (Gilligan). In patriarchy, men are said to predominate the roles moral authorities, political authorities and tend to enjoy more social privileges than the females in the society. In patriarchal societies men have the primary rights to make decisions. According to sociologists, patriarchy is a result of power differentials exiting between men and women as a result of the social product.
