QUESTION:A group of senior health service executives, clinicians and health policy managers from two large Catholic hospitals in Australia have recently completed a study tour in the United States. They have returned with a desire to reshape their services to achieve the kinds of outcomes they witnessed when they visited the Cleveland Clinic. At a recent conference, these managers spoke excitedly about the opportunities which the Cleveland Clinic model presented for the entire Catholic health sector. Their hospitals are members of Catholic Health Australia (CHA), the peak-body of Catholic hospitals, aged care and community services. The CEO of CHA was listening with interest to the presentation. She has offered your services to these two CEOs to produce a report of no more than 2,000 (+/- 20%) words to assist the two hospitals and the sector to engage with these ideas. You may include up to two appendices should you require it. They will not be included in the word count. However, they should present specific treatment of particular areas or proposals, or extended treatment of a particular area or issue. They should not exceed 2,000 words (as an additional word count to the report body) in total. To do so, you have suggested that the best way forward would be to develop the report by applying it to a ‘typical’ Catholic hospital in Australia. For this reason, you have selected the co-located St Vincent’s General Hospital and St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney as the ‘typical’ hospital.
