y deals with the Americans and the Great War from 1914-1919. The chapter mainly highlights the World War I, where the U.S. government under the President Woodrow Wilson opposed any type of entanglement in the international military conflicts. The first event highlights the efforts of Woodrow Wilson for less expansionist approach towards the American foreign policy compared to Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. He promoted the democracy as the best system to promote peace and stability, and U.S. should continue to pursue economic markets abroad. The second event talks about the start of World War I, when Serbian nationalist murdered Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28, 1914. In this this event it has been discussed that how Europe was dragged into the war and how resilient German forces were. The third event was when America was dragged into the war by Germans by the use of submarine warfare.
Also, Germany collaborated with Mexico in order to unleash war against U.S. The fourth event was how U.S. arranged large army by Passing Selective Service Act in 1917 to help the Allied forces. However, there were many oppositions from the eligible youths in forcefully joining the war. The fourth event is the passage of The Trading with the Enemy Act of 1917, which prohibits the individual trade with the enemy nation. This act had also banned use of postal services for disseminating any literature deemed as treason by postmaster general. The fourth event that attracted is the Espionage Act in which many war critics were silenced because of fear. Under this act prominent socialist Victor Berger was prosecuted and was twice denied with seats in congress.
