Qualitative and Quantitative Methods Part I Research Scenario Research Method Tool Methodology Rationale You are interested in exploring factors related to whether immigrants in your city are fearful of reporting crime to the police. You would like to see the effect of recent social media campaigns by the local police department on community member’s attitudes about the police. The local jail administrator is interested in testing the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with inmates and wants to compare outcomes for those inmates assigned to receive CBT with outcomes for those who do not receive it. The administrator for the state’s juvenile justice system has asked you to examine the data from the department’s risk assessment instrument to see if it accurately predicts youths’ risk to reoffend. In the wake of the COVID pandemic, there have been concerns about the proper implementation of health and safety guidelines in prisons in your state. You decide to fully examine this at the prison with the largest virus outbreak in the state. The local school board is interested in determining whether parents at each elementary, middle, and high school in the district are in favor of offering virtual options for their children to attend school. Your results need to be representative of parents across the district and by school level. Below are six research scenarios. Identify the most effective and efficient research method (experimental/quasi-experimental design, correlational, causal comparative, case study, observation/field research, evaluation, existing data — select one), primary data collection tool (survey, questionnaire, interview, focus groups, etc. — select one), type of data (qualitative or quantitative — select one), and rationale for each research scenario.
