Purpose:
To show your ability to answer a client-specific report brief by researching appropriate information from the library, organising content into a report structure, writing coherent sentences and paragraphs using clear vocabulary and grammar, and formatting your writing to tertiary-level academic standards.
Assignment question:
Choose one of the topics below for your report assignment. Include a minimum of five (5) academic sources to support your statements. Format your report using APA style publication standards.
Report briefs
Topic #1: E-waste With the demand for electronic products and the throw-away nature of consumer behaviour, electronic waste or e-waste is increasing at an alarming rate. What classifies as e-waste? What types of e-waste contribute most to the problem? Does it cause pollution? Is this a serious problem for New Zealand? What solutions can be provided? An independent, environmental working group, EnviroNZ, has requested a report to better understand the growing problem of electronic waste (or e-waste) disposal. Mary McKenna, Director of EnviroNZ, is interested in understanding the severity of this problem and what actions should be in place that could help individual homeowners, businesses, and public institutions in New Zealand. The research group will send your findings in a larger document to New Zealand's Minister for the Environment; therefore, your report should include feasible recommendations which will hopefully begin to address this complex social and environmental issue.
Topic #2: Employment in Small-to-Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) New Zealand is a country comprised of a large percentage of small-to-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) which provides unique challenges for the nation's economic growth. One of the challenges is fostering employment opportunities for all New Zealanders, especially as many people have moved to Australia for better job prospects. What is an SME? What types of businesses are SMEs? How has globalisation affected New Zealand's SMEs? What are the unique contributions that SMEs provide and challenges that they face? What steps can SMEs take to improve the employment situation in New Zealand? Massey University Professor of Enterprise Development, Claire Massey, would like you to write a report discussing these issues that affect all New Zealanders and not just the SMEs themselves.

I Introduction
E-waste refers to the electronic waste that is caused due to throwing away of electronic products.
Since they are of non degradable nature they lead to pollution. This report aims at being able to
provide useful recommendations for the purpose of effective disposal of e-waste in New
Zealand. The report is to be presented to EnvironNZ for the purpose of consolidating research
and presenting it to the government for taking several measures that can help in ensuring
improvement in disposal of e-waste as well as resolving of several environmental problems
caused due to incorrect disposal of e - waste, especially in New Zealand (Birrell, B & Healy, E
2009).
II Findings
Origin of E-waste
E-waste is nothing but the waste that is produced due to disposal of electronic devices which are
of no more use. This results in lot of contamination of the environment. It is extremely harmful
due to the CFL gases that are released from several electronic devices. These wastes need to be
dumped separately in empty sites away from the city in order to ensure that they do not
contaminate the environments of cities and places where populations reside. E-waste can prove
to be extremely harmful for the health of human beings and animals as well. In this way E-waste
which is nothing but the waste that comes due to discarding of several electronic gadgets
including TV, radio, floppies, computer spares, mobile phones, fridge, and all other electronic
devices is harmful to the environment. All of these are increasing in New Zealand since there is
growth in the software industry of New Zealand (Keyfitz, N 1991).
Demand for electronic products
There has been a sharp increase in the availability and demand of electronic gadgets since the
technological revolution. This has resulted in lot of money being spent on electronic gadgets
which include comfort gadgets, necessities and luxuries. This leads to an increase in demand for
electronic products by selling new products to the same customers again and again. Moreover as
the shelf life and usage of electronic products is growing smaller, since they are replaced faster
and there are more fads than fashion in this industry, it results in high demand for electronic
E-waste
goods. This is true even in case of New Zealand. The average usage of a mobile phone is 2 years
and a laptop is 3 years. As they are quickly replaced by newer models, it leads to higher levels of
E-waste.
Throw away nature of consumer behavior
As there is an improvement in standard of living and people can afford as well as are inclined
towards up gradation and up scaling of electronic devices by replacing them with new models, it
results in increase in E-waste significantly. It results in people buying new models of phones,
televisions, laptops, etc and discarding the old ones by dumping them in dump yards along with
other garbage. All of this results in pollution of the environment and leads to harmful effects on
health of people in the long run. It has also led to global warming since the CFL gases released
from the E-waste lead to depletion of the ozone layers.
Increase in e-waste at an alarming rate
There is an increase in e-waste at an alarming rate. It is increasing in terms of dumping in
New Zealand. It becomes essential that there be separation of e-waste and it be dumped
separately in a place away from the residence of populations. Even then it does lead to...
