Purpose:This assignment will give you an opportunity toreflect on how religion, spirituality, and worldview will intersect with your future career/vocation, to write in blog-style (conversational and evocative), and to interact with sources outside the Richter book.
Assignment Instructions
In 2-3 double spaced pages, discuss the following topics:
- The career you are aspiring to (if you don't know, choose anyhypothetical career you want for the purposes of this assignment).
- Why you have chosen this career path. Optional: Are any of your reasons linked to your own worldview (religious, spiritual, or non-religious)?
- How religion, spirituality, and worldvieware relevant to the career/vocation you are aspiring to. Here are some ways you could think about this question:
- Work ethic and personal values
- Serving others' needs
- Work/life balance
- Teamwork and team building
- Difficult decisions and problem solving
- Managing others and employee care
- Teaching and training
- Write about a hypothetical (or real) situation that may occur "on the job" that would require knowledge about religion(s) and spirituality. How would you handle the situation?
For this assignment, you will need to draw inspiration and at least one short quote from 2 outside sources.
Include a Works Cited at the conclusion of your blog inAPA format.Quotes should fit naturally in your piece, and should be followed with an in-text citation. For example: My work as a psychologist will require me to draw from my client's spirituality as a source of strength. As Smith explained, "Spirituality is a critical well that patients often draw from to find purpose and meaning in life" (2006, p. 4). A general rule is this: if you have explain why your quote is meaningful AFTER you have used it, then reevaluate.
Trustworthy sources include published books, journal articles, newspaper articles, and online articles from trustworthy publications such as The Atlantic, CNN, Religion News Service, Washington Post, New York Times, NPR, PBS, and National Geographic. If you aren't sure about the credibility of your source, feel free to send me an email and I will be happy toprovide feedback.
Blog Writing Style
A blog is a unique genre of writing that speaks to a general audience. Blogs usually make an argument and begin with a strong hook to gain the interest of the reader. Here are some blogs that I have written at theInterfaith Observer,Religious Studies News, andNASPA. In general, blogs write in a formal yet conversational tone. If you have additional question about blogwriting style, please reach out.
