The purpose of this assignment is to analyze a speech using the rhetorical terms and theories you have learned in this course. One of the best ways to learn how to deliver an effective speech is to analyze an effective speech.


Choose a speech that conveys a particularly strong message. This is anything in the world across any discipline or area of culture--from political speeches to historical speeches to popular speeches, such as those found on TedTalks, Youtube, or live on campus.



Requirements


This is an analytical, academic assignment, and as a result, your writing should reflect that. You should make sure to make a clear and precise argument as you analyze the rhetorical strategies employed in the speech that you are examining. Your paper must include the following elements:





  • Paper format


    • 3-4pages in length

    • APA format: 12 point font, Times New Roman font, double-spaced, and 1" standard margins.

    • Essay format using correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling





  • Content



    • Introduction:First, describe the speech. Provide context for the audience (Kairos). Where, when, and why types of questions should be answered. Focus on specific details, because your reader may not have heard this speech before and needs the context to understand your analysis and the reasons you chose this speech.

      • Provide a clear introduction with a thesis statement that presents a claim about the effectiveness of this speech.

      • The main thrust of your thesis statement should be on how the speech creates meaning and accomplishes its purposes for that specific audience (Aristotle's triangle).




    • Body:next, analyze the speech. Explore details and examine key parts of the speech as a whole, applying rhetorical terms, techniques, and strategies.

      • Discuss Ethos, Pathos, and Logos, rhetorical strategies and techniques such as language use or visuals

      • Provide evidence and support for your thesis and key analysis points




    • Conclusion:create an effective conclusion that provides interpretation and critical thinking that reaffirms your thesis statement.

Introduction
This essay is an analysis of one of the historical speech given by Barack Obama during Presidential elections in 2008.
Thesis statement
Being a black citizen it was important in the history of America that issues like racial inequality and discrimination should be highlighted in context of dissonance between that history and America’s ideals of human liberty (NPR, 2008). The speech also addressed the criticism on the relation of Obama and Rev. Jeremiah Wright, an unpaid campaign adviser and pastor at Obama's Chicago church.
Main thurst
From the perspective of Aristotle’s triangle this speech was targeting black and white population at large. It was stressed that as a unified force of the country it is the time to find solutions of such issues rather operating in a progressive society with division approach.
Analysis
Logos
Logos are used in speech for effective persuasion and establish a rational thinking. The logics and reasoning he presented to educate people about frustration due to such discrimination and how unproductive it is for the entire country. He highlighted the history where sin of slavery is associated with USA and how people are still caged in it. The legacy has occupied the minds of people and it is impacting there future.
