Purpose
The purpose of this Assessment Task is for you to gain an understanding of how clinical practice changes as a result of research and evidence-based practice. This assignment builds on your understanding of research, and research search skills gained in previous units.

Criterion 1: Identifies and accurately describes health priority area.

(20% weighting)

1.    Select a topic from one of the National Health Priority Action Areas (AIHW National Priority Areas); State the significance of the health issue in terms of incidence and prevalence, morbidity and mortality, influence on individual and health care system, financial costs.
Discuss the importance or significance of the health issue to nursing.
There are nine National Health Priority Action Areas from which to choose. You may narrow your focus within the National Health Priority Action Area, for example, by choosing a particular type of cancer or type of injury.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) website has an abundance of information and links to resources to explain the significance of the health issue as indicated in Step 1.
When you are discussing the importance or significance of the health issue to nursing you will need to consider the role that nurses play in the prevention, treatment and management of the health issue.


Criterion 2: Demonstrates the ability to locate research relevant to the health priority area; classify the evidence; and describe the strength of the evidence. (25% weighting)

2.    Retrieve from major bibliographic databases, such as PubMed, CINHAL, the Cochrane Library, the improvability evidence cited in at least 5 original research articles related to the health issue.
3.    Classify the evidence as primary research, evidence summary, or clinical practice guideline. Describe the strength of evidence.also mention, whether it is cinahl, or cochraine or pub med.


To perform well in relation to this criterion, you need to be able to search for relevant research and understand strengths and levels of evidence. You also need to demonstrate your ability to read and understand research articles by identifying the improvability evidence (evidence relating to the potential for changes that could lead to desired health outcomes, or improvements to the health care system).


Criterion 3: Critically analyses how research informs practice including the research-practice gap. (50% weighting)

4.    Describe the major EBP recommendations.
5.    Discuss the research-practice gap.
To perform well in relation to this criterion, you need to demonstrate your understanding of evidence-based practice and its importance to nursing by correctly and effectively applying key concepts in your discussion. Make sure that you define and explain key concepts as part of your discussion.
Analyse and synthesise the improvability evidence from the research articles that you retrieved to describe the major evidence-based practice recommendations for the health issue.
Discuss the gap between these recommendations and nursing practice. You may include in your discussion reasons why this gap exists. You may also refer to the elements of evidence-based practice
