Purpose of the Proposal
Write a proposal for the project which you intend to pursue in your formal report. The report should show that the project is relevant to your work/program of study, that the project is practical within the time limitations of the course, and that the project is worthwhile.
The following sections should be included in the proposal:
1. AnIntroductionto the project
2. AStatement of the Problemyou wish to solve (possibly including potential solutions)
3. TheScope(size or range) of the project
4. AnticipatedMethodsfor completing the project including two subsections:
a. ATask and Time Breakdownfor the project
b. A list ofResourcesfor the project (specific written materials, people to interview, hands on experiences, provide this in APA format, etc.)
5. YourQualificationsfor doing the report (typically coursework and /or experience)
6. AConclusionfor the report
The report can be tailored to your specific topic by adding any other categories and/or information which would be meaningful.
Format of the Proposal
The proposal should be two-to-three pages in length and should be word-processed in standard memorandum format. The format has a heading with the following lines: Date, To, From, Subject. Thesubject lineshould include thespecific topicfor your formal report.
The format for a memo is single-spaced within paragraphs and double-spaced between paragraphs. Appropriate headings should be included to indicate the subject matter covered in the sections of the report. The report should be professional in appearance as would be expected of a report submitted in a work setting.
Details in the Proposal
In theTask and Time Breakdownsection of the proposal, list the deadlines that are listed in your syllabus such as Rough Drafts, Final Draft, and Presentation. In addition to the deadlines that I have given you,
include your own personal deadlinesfor the project (planning the report, performing library/online research, completing interviews, preparing illustrations, writing rough drafts, etc.). Putting these deadlines in writing will help you to stay on track to get the project done.
