BACKGROUND In order for mathematics to be seen as being relevant to a person’s life it needs to be linked to real life. This assignment has been designed around a real life scenario that will involve the use of financial literacy skills, planning, decision making and creating a suitable worksheet. In completing this assignment, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of some of the content and processes relevant to this Unit. PURPOSE - LINKS TO THE UNIT OUTCOMES The assignment potentially links with outcomes 1, 2, 5 and 6 of the unit outcomes. Links with these outcomes may take place depending upon the focus of your investigation. ASSIGNMENT PROCESS The assignment topic will give you the opportunity to: (i) investigate a real life problem. (ii) investigate the type of mathematics that is inherent in the solving of everyday problems. (iii) demonstrate your ability to plan, research and budget (iv) demonstrate your understanding of the concepts, understandings and processes that have been introduced in this unit. (v) be creative in the way you investigate the problem. ASSUMPTIONS YOU NEED TO MAKE WHEN COMPLETING THIS ASSIGNMENT To successfully complete this assignment, you need to assume that: · The level of mathematics required is that taught at primary school and that you can budget and use this mathematics to solve this real life problem. · Each decision will involve at least two comparisons. For example, if you are costing a particular product or service you need to compare the costs and other relevant factors from at least two different suppliers or similar options and justify your final choice. ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS Prepare a report on how you would investigate the options for your class. If you have previously completed this unit you are not allowed to use any part of your previous assignment. Treat this assignment as a real-life experience so that your enthusiasm and creativity are evident in your investigation report. ASSIGNMENT TOPIC: Plan and organise a “Year 6 Farewell Night”. You are working as a Year 6 teacher at a school of your choice. You have been given the task of organising and running the “Year 6 Farewell Night” for your school. You will need to organise a venue, catering, a disco, fund raising, a flyer, three awarded prizes and the run sheet. You will also need to compare two alternatives (options) for each of the venue, catering and disco. You need to write down the reasons for the one you have chosen. Some issues that need to be addressed include cost (each alternative needs to be fully costed), practicality, convenience and any other relevant factors. You need to use in text referencing and a list of references at the end to show where you found your information about costs and any other details. When you have decided on the venue, the catering and the disco you will need to work out the total cost and then use this to find the cost per person and put this on the flyer. Other details which must be addressed in your assignment (i) Would you invite parents/ teachers/principals as well? You need to consider security and student supervision. Note that you need to give reasons to your decision. (ii) Fund raising and with details included. (iii) Presentation of prizes award for best academic, best at sport, and most community minded. Your task is to find a suitable prize for each of these categories and find the cost of each and the total cost of prizes. (iv) You need to produce a run sheet that lists the order of events for the night and the time for commencing and concluding for each event. (v) You are required to demonstrate and explain in words the mathematical processes involved in two methods for each of the following: add, subtract, multiply and divide. You are also required to give two examples of finding a percentage of an amount, finding a fraction of an amount and explaining in words the mathematical processes involved. (vi) APA referencing must be used for both in text referencing (all prices and information needs to be referenced) and the list of references. Link for information on APA Referencing. REPORT Your report must contain the following sections: · Introduction Introduce yourself, your class and your school. The purpose of the assignment. How many children and teachers do you anticipate will attend? The issues you will address in the report which should include the venue, the catering, the disco, the fund raise, the prizes, the flyer and the run sheet. What mathematical subject areas do you want to address with? Note that the introduction is meant to be brief so leave the details till later. · Financial Comparisons Compare in terms of cost at least two different venues options, two different catering options and two different disco options. · Decision Making Justify and explain your decision between the two different venue options, the two different catering options and the two different disco options. What aspects did you consider? Note that you do not need to select the cheapest options. Explain your choice/type of fund raising and work out the amount of money raised. Explain your choice of prizes and find individual cost and the total cost of the prizes. Explain your choice of guest for any speeches and presentation of prizes. Create a flyer that will promote your “Year 6 Farewell Night” to students and parents and will inform them of details such as cost (What is the anticipated total cost and estimated cost per person depending on the number you expect to attend), time and venue etc., You need to include in your flyer geometric shapes. Will you print these at school or have them done professionally? How many will you need? · Working that must be shown A minimum of two different methods for each of the following: (i) Addition. (ii) Subtraction. (iii) Multiplication. (iv) Division. A minimum of two different examples of each of the following: (i) Finding Percentages of an amount. (ii) Finding Fractions of an amount. · Mathematical Methods that must be explained The following mathematical methods and processes must be thoroughly explained in words: (i) Addition. (ii) Subtraction. (iii) Multiplication. (iv) Division. (v) Finding Percentages of an amount. (vi) Finding Fractions of an amount. · Express the cost of the prizes as a fraction and as a percentage of the total cost of the event, · Visual aids such as graphs to display significant information from your expenditure/income. · A run sheet for the night showing each activity and the time to start and finish that activity. · APA referencing must be used for both in text referencing and for the list of references at the end. Link for information on APA Referencing. Submission Details 1. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT YOU SHOW A DRAFT OF YOUR ASSIGNMENT TO YOUR TEACHER WELL BEFORE THE FINAL DAY. 2. Submit the complete report including a scanned and signed copy of the cover sheet by midnight Friday 14th May 2020. 3.
