Purpose As a graduating student, and a future professional Early Childhood Educator (ECE), it is important to consider your philosophy of teaching and learning. A statement of philosophy acts as a framework for you to use when deciding on a setting to work in, designing your program, and supporting children and families; it defines you as a professional. Course Learning Outcomes CLO 1: Compose and analyze constructive feedback on personal and professional development to create professional documents. CLO 4: Critique self and personal beliefs using various theoretical frameworks to develop a philosophy of teaching and learning. CLO 8: Examine personal pedagogical practices and commitments to demonstrate understanding of the role of the reflective practice in ECE. The Assignment Part 1: Mind map Mind maps help us organize our thoughts and gather all required information prior to writing it out in a succinct manner. Reflect on your views, beliefs and values about teaching and learning, class discussions, readings from this and other courses and placement experiences. Keeping in mind the key ideas outlined below, use a tool such as Pictochart, Power Point, Prezi, Bubbl or another digital tool to create a mind map of your philosophy. Key ideas are to be explored separately or together: • Your image of the child • The image and role of the educator • Your view of families and communities • Your view of the environment With your mind map, include references to literature and personal experiences that impact(ed) your values and beliefs. Explain how theory(ies), worldview(s) and/or pedagogical approach(es) influence each one of the key components. Your mind map should be as detailed as possible and demonstrate interconnections between all key ideas.
