Introduction
Community can be defined as the group of people who share the common geographical region. Community can be formed when people either living is same neighbourhood or share similar interest or needs. It has been observed that all the communities are equally concerned about the healthcare issues prevailing in their communities. There are certain healthcare issues and concerns, which are common to all the communities. People of the communities often work with governmental and non-governmental agencies to promote healthy life. Most of the communities are under burden of diseases like diabetes and obesity. They are vulnerable to health concern like smoking. There is various type of strategies implemented in the communities by healthcare services to handle these kinds of situations.
Part 1 Key strategies implemented in community to address obesity
Background of the disease
The preventable concern selected is obesity. As suggested by Ogden, Carroll, Fryar, and Flegal (2015), obesity has become the global burden. Every other person whether adult or a child is suffering from the disease. It is responsible for lowering the quality of life people and reducing their life span by making them suffered from disease, which generate in body due to obesity. As noted by Flegal, Kruszon-Moran, Carroll, Fryar, and Ogden (2016), the frequency of increase of this disease is very alarming. Change in the lifestyle and eating habit makes the world vulnerable to this vicious disease. It is easy to become obese but very difficult to regain shape. Obesity can make the people vulnerable to many chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol. Some of the obese people suffered from breathing disorder. Obesity is responsible for lowering self-esteem in people mainly teenagers and youth who are very cautious about their look. This disease can be diagnosed by observing physically or measuring BMI index.
Laverack’s ladder of community-based interaction
Laverack’s ladder of participation provides the framework, which acts as guide for the community-based interaction. As suggested by Ofanoaa, Percivala, Huggarda and Buetowa (2015), according to Laverack’s ladder of community-based interaction, the level of participation in the community start from readiness of community then process of participation itself. The readiness of the community engages organisation, helps in developing capacity, which collectively with their action, finally contributing to empowerment of community. According to this model, participation does not mean commitment whereas engagement is highest form of commitment. As suggested by Freeman et al. (2016), leadership is an important element in community-based interaction in healthcare promotion. Empowerment can be achieved only when leadership is strong. It is necessary to encourage community to participate in the healthcare program so that there is successful implementation of the program.
Key strategies used to implement program to prevent obesity
The three strategies, which can be used to implement the program for prevention of obesity includes community development program, policy making and leadership building. As mentioned by Rosen, O’Neill, and Hutson (2018), role of government is necessary in community development. Making of the policy is necessary to provide strength to the initiative. Making of the policy ensure the implementation of the program as mandatory. When any program is recommended, it cannot have guarantee of its implementation and there are no laws to push government to involve in successful implementation of the program. As suggested by Hunter (2018), making of policy ensures that government will play active role in success of the implemented program. The implementation of the healthcare policies is helpful in encouraging people to participate and formation of leadership, which is helpful in empowering the community.
In community-development program, healthcare awareness program will be initiated, in which people of the community are made aware of the harmful impact of the obesity on health. As suggested by Waters et al. (2018), this healthcare promotion program will be held in schools, colleges, and other public places so that every individual can be made aware of the disease and its impact on quality of the life. Under the program, doctors and...
