Australian workplaces are obligated to conduct work health safety assessments and provide methods by which safety incidents can be reported. Work health safety has significant implications for public health, but all workplaces are required to put work health safety policies and procedures in place to promote safety in the workplace.Instructions:To prepare for this assignment:PUBH6002 Assessment Brief 2 131118.docx Page 2 of 8 Locate a suitable environment for conducting a work health safety risk assessment. This may be your own workplace, the workplace of a friend or family member, or a home office space. Make sure that you seek permission to conduct an assessment in a professional environment. Download the work health safety risk assessment template. Review the resources at the Health and Safety Handbook website, and the steps to undertaking a Work Health and safety assessment here: https://www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au/riskTo complete your work health safety risk assessment:1. Work through the steps of completing a work safety risk assessment and use the template provided to record any hazards identified, existing controls in place, the relative risk level, and any controls that are needed to further reduce risk. Remember that the purpose is to reduce risk and mitigate the effects of risks where risk is inherently present.2. In a diverse workplace there may be subpopulations that are more vulnerable to the effects of a safety risk than others. Identify and describe any vulnerable populations, and propose solutions for mitigating risks for these groups. To write up this case study:1. Identify and describe any key agencies or institutions that govern work health safety in this type of working environment, and any policies that are relevant to maintaining a safe work environment (policies can be organisational, discipline-specific and/or national).2. Summarise the findings of your work health safety assessment, including details relevant to managing risk for vulnerable populations, and provide recommendations to resolve the work safety risks identified.Assessment criteriaThe following factors will impact the assessment of your review:1. Introduction
    Workplace health
and safety is crucial as employee turnover depends on it. Thus, the organizations are focused to generate effective policies in alignment with workplace health and safety. In this study, the focus is made on an Australian mental healthcare organization, Thomas Embling Hospital and a thorough risk assessment is carried considering employee health and safety. The study aims to highlight the rules and standards developed by the Australian government to safeguard the employees of mental healthcare facilities. A detailed risk assessment is outlined in the Appendix section of the study.
Background of the company
One of the most secured forensic mental hospitals is the Thomas Embling Hospital and is located in the suburban regions of Melbourne. The hospital is found to provide continuing and acute care programs along with a separate and dedicated women’s unit. In this hospital, patients are admitted from the criminal justice system based on the Mental Health Act 2014, Sentencing Act 1991 or Crimes Act 1997 (Forensicare, 2020). The hospital regulations allow admission of small groups of patients every year related to distinct public mental health services under the Mental Health Act 2014. The hospital was designed with the aim to deliver advanced clinical care to treat the patients affected by acute mental health problems. Additionally, the hospital generates an array of therapeutic programs that are innovative and are delivered within the recovery architecture. The activities of the healthcare services are associated with societal and individual values.
The hospital recruits external contracted providers to generate recreation and education programs, which are implemented by Healthstream and Kangan Institute. In order to assess the quality of care, the hospital collaborates with staff, patients, carers and definite service agencies so that the needs of the consumers are attained (Forensicare, 2020). Healthstream generates individual structured and tailored fitness programs for workers, as well as the patient in the hospital. The program is designed around the sports hall, swimming pool and strength and cardio rooms, which are located at a secure and separate campus of the hospital.
Risk Assessment
The assessment of risk with respect to mental healthcare workers is challenging but provides an opportunity to engage in the hospital’s environment and interact with a different hierarchy of the employees to promote worker's safety, recovery and wellbeing (Olashore et al., 2018). A good risk assessment is found to include an amalgamated approach towards social factors such as employment status and relationship problems and psychological factors such as current mental health status. This is defined to b a part of the comprehensive review of the mental healthcare workers to acquire their care needs and evaluate the risks of harm to other people or themselves. The hospital’s unit must analyze the various risks encountered by the staff and their causal factors such as severity, imminence and likelihood of the negative events such as elf-neglect, self-harm or violence. Perry et al. (2017) stated that in most of the risk assessments in mental health departments are based on prediction and assumptions. The workers are categorized as low, medium or high risk in alignment with a specific outcome.
In this context, the risk assessors have developed risk scales or checklists of characteristics so that they can estimate the events of harmful acts. On the contrary, Ryan et al. (2018) argued that risk categorization can develop numerous challenges such as working peacefully, work-life balance and others in guiding the wellness and safety among the mental healthcare staffs. However, stated that in spite of common risks associated with every mental health workers, the risk is evident to be individual and thus, requires a personalized solution.
