Summary:
The growing complexity of the competitive environment of many industries during the 1970s
convinced many top managers that they did indeed need more systematic analysis of their
competitors, and many large corporations set up specialized competitor analysis systems. The
companies need to have a strong focus on analysing the competition which is considered an
essential aspect of the corporate strategy. Initially competitor’s analysis was neglected by the
managers. The managers gave little emphasis on analysing the competition and the strategies,
objectives and goals of the competitors. To have a competitive edge in the market, the
companies need to focus on satisfying the needs and wants of the consumers. The companies
should focus on examining the competition by drawing up the demographic profile of the
competition in the industry. Initially the companies used to focus on the national or local
customers and market, but now the companies are strongly focusing on expansion with a
strong focus on global market. The companies and the management needs to have a strong
