Privatization – Introduction
Private prison is a place in which third party enter into agreement w
ith a government agency for individuals who are physically confined. Government pay a per diem or monthly rate for each prisoner confined in the facility to private prison companies. The prison privatization is the adoption of the existing public facilities which are managed by private operators and also the building and function of new additional prisons by prison companies with profit motive.
Privatization Forms:
· Services contracting (Providing services like drug treatment, training, health treatment)
· Management and prison operations
· Contracting out prison labor (Prisoners work for competitive wages)
Privatization is not a new arrangement — federal and state governments have a long history of giving contract to private firms for specific services like medical services, food preparation, training, and inmate transportation.
