In psychology, emotion is frequently described as a complicated state of feeling that results in bodily and mental changes that have an impact on thought and behavior. Emotionality is related to several psychological phenomena, such as personality, mood, and motivation. Emotion can therefore exist as information to guide how we engage with the world. They can restrict our behaviors in line with the scenario. There are three major categories of theories of emotion which are physiological, neurological, and cognitive theories. In addition, many experts have created different theories. They are Evolutionary, James-Lange, Cannon-bard, Schachter-Singer, Cognitive Appraisal, and Facial-Feedback theories.
Since childhood, my parents believed that just because I have weak leg’s I can’t do things on my own or can go to travel to new places or can hike for hours a day. This thinking of theirs has inappropriately turned my life into sadness. For an instance, I stopped playing football or any other sports just because I do have weak legs and when I play some sports it will hurt my legs. Just like in James-Lange’s theory of emotion, “someone feels sad or happy only after physiological arousal”, whereas in this case, I feel sad after knowing that my legs are weak.
Even though my legs are weak my brother who is a photographer by a profession always motivates me that I can do the things that I want in my life. He has planned one trip in which I have to walk several hours a day and about that trip, I asked my parents for permission for that trip. But they refused me just because of my legs. But I have already decided of going on that trip and I went on that trip. On that trip, I feel so exhausted but also, I completed my hike without resting a bit and proven to myself that I can go on a trip and walk for hours. It is not due to my weak legs but due to my mentality and the environment, I was unable to complete the task.
Just like in the Facial-Feedback theory of emotion, “people who forced themselves to smile will have a better time”, whereas in this situation my brother planned a trip and forced me to be on that trip which has turned my weakness into strength through which I was able to complete my hike and that thing makes me feel happy.
After having a successful first trip and knowing that I can do hikes we went on a trip to RARA Lake which is considered the deepest and clearest lake in Nepal. The trip was fixed on Dashain’s vacation and the journey towards our destination was quite problematic. On that trip, after spending many hours in the jeep we feel exhausted. The jeep driver left us at Talca Airport from which we have 5 hours of hike. During the hike from Talca Airport to RARA lake we all feel frightened because of the dark forest where no one is walking by. Similarly, after reaching the main entrance it was already 6 in the evening. We have taken a tent so that we can stay in the tent camping outside the tent. But arriving late at the destination we already are scared because we have to camp in the lower base of a big jungle where no any people is visible. While searching the spot for our camping all of our eyes went on a footprint of animals in which we thought that footprint is of the tiger. After seeing those footprints we immediately feel frightened. According to Cannon-Bard’s theory, “physical arousal and emotional experience occur instantly, but independently”, whereas in this case, we have experienced two similar experiences. One is we feel scared instantly when we see dense forests where no person is walking, and another is footprints of tiger made us react and feel scared instantly when we have our eyes on those footprints.
Hence, emotion is the state of feeling that results in physical and mental bodily changes which have impacts on notions and habits. In this work, I have faced three types of emotions that get connected with three theories by experts. Therefore, one’s emotions play a vital role in the future decision whereas due to the environment they might feel demotivated.
